In late 2017 a band named Dayless popped up in my suggestion list on instagram. Since then they have changed their name to Audrey No and this past January they released their first single under the new name. For a long time I had wanted to interview them and get to know the band, so this past month I reached out to the them over Facebook. Jay Marie, the lead vocalist, graciously replied to my inquiry and we proceeded to have an interview over email.
Audrey No is a sextet pop rock band composed of various talented musicians. Jay Marie introduces the rest of her bandmates.
“Our band is made up of two guitarists Yangsu Ha and Youngmin Kim, bassist Youngsin Park, keyboardist Myunghwan Kim and drummer Gyeongho Son.”
Furthermore, “I was introduced to Yangsu a few years back and we started working on some songs together just for fun. After a while, he asked our bassist, drummer, and keyboardist to join and Youngmin was introduced to me by a mutual friend. We had our first practice all together in the summer of 2017.”
Jay Marie continues, “As for the name change, there were a lot of local bands with really similar names and I had gotten some valuable feedback that the name was forgettable. Our name now, Audrey No, is a play on ‘Jane Doe’ and I think it suits us better than our original name.”
What was incredibly surprising about the band is that it’s comprised of musicians that are part of some incredibly talented bands. Youngsin says, “Yangsu and I have played in a band called Witches (위치스) for quite a long time. Now, Gyeongho and Myunghwan are preparing together with us. Gyeongho also performs as a part of Seoul Electric Band (서울전자음악단) as well.”
Not to stray away from Audrey No, but Witches is a fabulous ska band that has been doing music since around 2002. Seoul Electric Band is equally striking, a rock band who was one of the two bands that attended SXSW back in 2007 and paved the way for other South Korean bands to attend the music festival that is held every year in Austin, Texas U.S.A. Finding out that some members of these two bands are part of Audrey No was thrilling and I’m honestly excited to hear more music from them.
However, what initially caught my ear was the lead vocalist’s voice. Her voice is notably unique, delicate yet captivating and it emits a subtle lulling comfort. At first I thought her voice had hints of Shakira, later hints of Joy from Jesse and Joy. After much debate Rebecca, my colleague, said she also had hints of Mazzy Star and Tori Amos. I’m genuinely in awe by the lead vocalist’s voice and I’m surprised every time I go back an listen to their singles. To my comments Jay Marie responds, “Wow, thank you. I was always singing alone in my room as a kid but I didn’t have the confidence and I didn’t think music was for me. Even a few years back, when we first started, I had to drink a whole bottle of wine before recording just to chill out a little. I think I’ve improved a lot since then just by consistently practicing and recording.”
It’s hard to imagine Jay Marie having trouble singing, because the band’s music hardly reflects otherwise. She has skillfully harnessed her voice and it’s masterfully captured in their releases.
Upon further asking about her home country Jay Marie says she’s originally from Arkansas, USA, “home to many cows.”
“I came to Seoul for the first time to visit a Korean friend I met in university. I’m from a small town so I fell in love with city life right away. After I graduated, I came back and studied Korean – thought I would just be here for a year or two. Four and a half years later, my whole life is here.”
She adds, “I’m on an entertainment visa to release music here and I can’t legally do any work that isn’t related to entertainment, so… please listen to and share our music! Haha”
In order to further understand and connect with their music I ask the band what inspires or influences them. “I like Sparklehorse’s sound and their music’s sensibility,” says Yangsu.
Jay Marie reveals, “I’ve always loved singer-songwriters like Regina Spektor and Fiona Apple – I also grew up listening to a wide collection of 80s and 90s rock bands, curated by my dad.”
As for what they are currently listening Youngsin replies, “We listen to a wide variety of music, so it’s hard to pinpoint just one artist.”
Jay Marie, on the other hand says she likes Wooze. “I recently met them in Seoul and they are both sweethearts making really cool music and art. I recommend listening to them when you want to feel like you’re having more fun than everyone else.”
I move on to ask about how they compose their music.
“When we first started working together, Yangsu would send me instrumental tracks he made and then I would write melody and lyrics for the track. We wrote “Blue Smoke” and “Promise” like that. Now, I write most of our songs on guitar first, then bring the song to the band and we arrange it together in our practice studio,” answers Jay Marie.
As for how they approach lyric writing she replies, “I studied poetry in university so originally I tried to turn poetry into songs, but it was harder than I expected. I had to learn a new method of writing, one where I could let lyrics do half the talking and instruments do the other half. I like simple lyrics, but I think they’re the hardest to write. I’m still learning a lot about songwriting as I go.”
In the fall of 2018 there was a tribute album released for the band Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter for their 30th anniversary of their self-titled debut album in which many artists participated including Jay Marie. It was released right after we saw Hyukoh perform in Los Angeles, CA U.S.A. I was so surprised when I read that Jay Marie not only participated in the tribute, but also collaborated with Oh Hyuk and Inwoo of Hyukoh. Jay Marie says, “I was also surprised! After I got the call and Oh Hyuk explained the project to me, I heard the song for the first time that night and then went to record it in the studio the very next day. I was a bit nervous, but thankfully the boys were so lovely and easy going and fun. I really enjoyed Hyukoh’s latest album so it was very cool to get to record something together. The tribute album, overall, was such a good experience and an honor to get to be a part of.”
With this last question it brings me back to their latest release which I talked about at the beginning of this interview. The single was released at the end of January and it’s called “Time With You.”
“The song is about just appreciating the time you get with someone who makes you feel good. Living anywhere as a foreigner can be a really isolating experience, so the moments I’m spending time with people I connect with are the ones I treasure the most,” Jay Marie explains.
“Time With You” beautifully captures how talented everyone is. The single emanates feelings of comfort and warmth. The pace of the song is slow moving with short pauses after every verse, which illustrates in a way those moments we spend with our loved ones that we wish would last longer. The melody is adorned with a short tambourine beat that adds a splash of playfulness to the song.
This single is only a taste of what’s to come Jay Marie reveals, “Right now we’re working on finishing our first full album – we want to release it in the spring of this year. After that? Hopefully lots of live shows.”
Before we end any interview there are a few questions I love to ask. First, since this article will also be published in Spanish, we like to ask what countries they’d like play in if they ever tour in Latin America.
Jay Marie: Maybe Brazil? Recently we got a comment on our music video that said “Brazil loves you” – so I want to go where we’re loved!
Gyeongho: Colombia. I have good memories from visiting there.
Second, we are always looking for new music to listen to. So we asked if there are any other South Korean band/s they suggest we listen to.
Youngsin: A while ago, we played a show with a band called 멋진인생 (Awesome Life) – they were great and memorable.

Tiempo con Audrey No (오드리 노)
A fines de 2017, una banda llamada Dayless apareció en mi lista de sugerencias en Instagram. Desde entonces, la banda cambió su nombre a Audrey No y el pasado mes de enero lanzaron su primer sencillo con el nuevo nombre. Durante mucho tiempo quise entrevistarlos y conocer a la banda, así que el mes pasado los contacté a través de Facebook. Jay Marie, la vocalista principal, respondió amablemente a mi mensaje y procedimos a tener una entrevista por correo electrónico.
Audrey No es una banda sexteto pop rock compuesta por varios músicos talentosos. Jay Marie presenta al resto de sus compañeros de banda.
“Nuestra banda está formada por dos guitarristas Yangsu Ha y Youngmin Kim, el bajista Youngsin Park, el teclista Myunghwan Kim y el baterista Gyeongho Son.”
Además, “Me presentaron a Yangsu hace unos años y comenzamos a trabajar en algunas canciones juntos solo por diversión. Después de un rato, le pidió a nuestro bajista, baterista y teclista que se uniera y Youngmin me presentó un amigo en común. Tuvimos nuestra primera práctica todos juntos en el verano de 2017.”
Jay Marie continúa, “En cuanto al cambio de nombre, había muchas bandas locales con nombres muy similares y recibí algunos comentarios valiosos de que el nombre era olvidable. Nuestro nombre ahora, Audrey No, es un juego de palabras que proviene de “Jane Doe” y creo que nos queda mejor que nuestro nombre original.”
Lo sorprendente de la banda es que está compuesta por músicos que forman parte de algunas bandas increíblemente talentosas. Youngsin dice, “Yangsu y yo hemos tocado en una banda llamada Witches (위치스) durante bastante tiempo. Ahora, Gyeongho y Myunghwan se están preparando junto con nosotros. Gyeongho también se presenta como parte de la banda Seoul Electric Band (서울 전자 음악단) también.”
No me quiero desviar de Audrey No, pero Witches es una fabulosa banda de ska que ha estado haciendo música desde alrededor del 2002. Seoul Electric Band es igualmente sorprendente, una banda de rock que fue una de las dos bandas que asistieron a SXSW en 2007 y abrieron las puertas para que otras bandas surcoreanas asistieran al festival de música que se celebra cada año en Austin, Texas, EE. UU. Al descubrir que algunos miembros de estas dos bandas son parte de Audrey No fue emocionante y, sinceramente, estoy ansiosa por escuchar nuevas canciones.
Sin embargo, lo que inicialmente me llamó la atención fue la voz de la vocalista. Su voz es notablemente única, delicada pero cautivadora y emite un sutil confort de calma. Al principio, pensé que su voz tenía indicios de Shakira, más tarde indicios de Joy de Jesse y Joy. Después de mucho debate, Rebecca, mi colega, dijo que también tenía indicios de Mazzy Star y Tori Amos. Estoy realmente asombrada por la voz de la vocalista principal y me sorprende cada vez que vuelvo a escuchar sus sencillos. A mis comentarios, Jay Marie responde, “Wow, gracias. Siempre cantaba solo en mi habitación cuando era niña, pero no tenía la confianza y no creía que la música fuera para mí. Incluso hace unos años, cuando empezamos, tuve que beber una botella de vino antes de grabar solo para relajarme un poco. Creo que he mejorado mucho desde entonces solo practicando y grabando constantemente.”
Es difícil imaginar a Jay Marie teniendo problemas para cantar, porque la música de la banda apenas refleja lo contrario. Ella ha desarrollado hábilmente su voz y está capturada magistralmente en sus lanzamientos.
Al preguntar más sobre su país de origen, Jay Marie dice que es originaria de Arkansas, EE. UU., “Hogar de muchas vacas.”
“Vine a Seúl por primera vez para visitar a un amigo coreano que conocí en la universidad. Soy de un pueblo pequeño, así que me enamoré de la vida de la ciudad de inmediato. Después de graduarme, volví y estudié coreano, pensé que solo estaría aquí por un año o dos. Cuatro años y medio después, toda mi vida está aquí.”
Ella agrega, “Estoy con una visa de entretenimiento para lanzar música aquí y no puedo hacer ningún trabajo que no esté relacionado con el entretenimiento, así que … ¡por favor escuchen y compartan nuestra música! Jaja”
Para entender mejor y conectarse más con su música, le pregunto a la banda qué los inspira o los influencia. “Me gusta el sonido de Sparklehorse y la sensibilidad de su música,” dice Yangsu.
Jay Marie revela, “Siempre me han encantado los cantautores como Regina Spektor y Fiona Apple. También crecí escuchando una amplia colección de bandas de rock de los 80 y 90, curada por mi padre.”
En cuanto a lo que están escuchando actualmente, Youngsin responde, “Escuchamos una gran variedad de música, por lo que es difícil identificar a un solo artista.”
Jay Marie, por otro lado, dice que le gusta Wooze. “Hace poco los conocí en Seúl y ambos son unos cariños haciendo música y arte realmente genial. Recomiendo escucharlos cuando quieran sentir que se están divirtiendo más que los demás.”
Sigo la entrevista preguntándoles cómo componen su música.
“Cuando empezamos a trabajar juntos, Yangsu me enviaba pistas instrumentales que él hacía y luego yo escribía melodía y letras para la canción. Escribimos “Blue Smoke” y “Promise” así. Ahora, primero escribo la mayoría de nuestras canciones en la guitarra, luego traigo la canción a la banda y la arreglamos en nuestro estudio de práctica juntos,” responde Jay Marie.
En cuanto a cómo escriben su lírica, ella responde, “Estudié poesía en la universidad, así que originalmente intenté convertir la poesía en canciones, pero fue más difícil de lo que esperaba. Tuve que aprender un nuevo método de escritura, uno en el que podía dejar que las letras hablarán una mitad y los instrumentos la otra mitad. Me gustan las letras simples, pero creo que son las más difíciles de escribir. Todavía estoy aprendiendo mucho sobre composición de canciones a medida que avanzo.”
En el otoño de 2018, se hizo un álbum tributo para la banda Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter (Primavera, Verano, Otoño e Invierno) por el 30 aniversario de su álbum debut autotitulado, en el que participaron muchos artistas, entre ellos Jay Marie. Salió justo después de ver a Hyukoh en concierto en Los Angeles, CA U.S.A. Me sorprendió tanto cuando leí que Jay Marie no solo participó en el tributo, sino que también colaboró con Oh Hyuk e Inwoo de Hyukoh. Jay Marie dice, “¡También me sorprendió! Después de que recibí la llamada y Oh Hyuk me explicó el proyecto, escuché la canción por primera vez esa noche y luego fui a grabarla en el estudio al día siguiente. Estaba un poco nerviosa, pero afortunadamente los chicos eran encantadores, tranquilos y divertidos. Realmente disfruté el último álbum de Hyukoh, así que fue genial poder grabar algo juntos. El álbum tributo, en general, fue una experiencia tan buena y un honor ser parte de él.”
Con esta última pregunta, vuelvo a su último lanzamiento del que hablé al principio de esta entrevista. El sencillo fue lanzado a fines de enero y se llama “Time With You (Tiempo Contigo).”
“La canción es simplemente apreciar el tiempo que pasas con alguien que te hace sentir bien. Vivir en cualquier lugar como extranjero puede ser una experiencia realmente aislada, por lo que los momentos en los que paso tiempo con las personas con las que me conecto son los que más que valoro,” explica Jay Marie.
“Time With You” captura maravillosamente el talento de todos. La canción emana sensaciones de confort y calidez. El ritmo de la canción avanza lentamente con breves pausas después de cada verso, lo que ilustra de una manera los momentos que pasamos con nuestros seres queridos que deseamos que duren más tiempo. La melodía está adornada con un breve ritmo de pandereta que agrega un toque de alegría a la canción.
Este sencillo es solo una muestra de lo que vendrá Jay Marie revela, “En este momento estamos trabajando para terminar nuestro primer álbum completo. Queremos lanzarlo en la primavera de este año. ¿Después de esto? Esperemos que haya muchos shows en vivo.”
Antes de terminar cualquier entrevista, hay algunas preguntas que me encanta hacer. Primero, dado que este artículo también se publicará en español, nos gustaría preguntar a qué países les gustaría tocar si alguna vez hacen una gira por América Latina.
