“Recorded this at home with a cheap mic and a heavy heart. These songs/recordings came from a pretty dark and desperate time in my life. Would have given up completely if it weren’t for loved ones that did not give up on me.
To anyone needing to seek help please reach out to someone, to anyone, to even me. I know how hard it is to ask.”
Big Phony (Bobby Choy) is back and he’s baring his soul with his latest EP “The Silent Motto.” The above message accompanies the five track EP on the artist’s Bandcamp page. With this release, the self-effacing artist who hides beneath a paper bag, has created another beautiful work of art.
I adore Big Phony’s DIY style. I love that it’s so raw and honest. I marvel at his bravery and tenacity, and at his willingness to show such vulnerability. Big Phony sounds great without all of the bells and whistles BECAUSE of his recording process, not in spite of it. There is a depth of feeling that these songs emote which might be lost if it were being recorded in a studio and polished up in post-production, instead of “at home with a cheap mic and a heavy heart.”
I am an empath, too many mirror neurons in my head I suppose, and while it breaks my heart wide open to think about the painful times that must have influenced the songs on this EP, it is a true testament to how accomplished Big Phony is as a songwriter and storyteller. His ability to write songs that resonate with people, even though they have had different life experiences is the proof. “The Silent Motto” taps back into the emotion felt on the albums “Bobby” and “Long Live the Lie,” released simultaneously in 2014, both of which had their heavy moments.
“The Silent Motto” speaks to the heart of the human condition, the struggles we go through and the strength that it takes, at times, to continue fighting through another day. I have been a fan of this artist for a long time and this EP is my favorite from him to date. It is beautiful in its entirety and I am so thankful that he chose to put it out into the world. Please go check it out on Bandcamp where you can listen to and purchase the EP. Also, if you are in Austin, TX for SXSW in a couple of weeks, please come to see Big Phony live at the Central Presbyterian Church on March 15th at 10 PM or at the Austin Convention Center on March 16th at 12:30 PM.
