At the beginning of February, I came across Cloudian on Kindie Español, a Facebook page dedicated to sharing South Korean music to Spanish speaking audiences who mainly reside in Latin America. Although, I’m one of the people who manages the page, I’m probably one of the least active, but thanks to my colleague Cecille I was able to come across Cloudian.
In the coming days after watching one of their music videos, I immersed myself in their first full-length release “The Unknown Tale” which I found on Youtube. The album has a mix of different musical styles, the most evident however, is the sound elements from popular Japanese rock bands. My first impression was the grandeur of the songs that it made me recall those opening/ending OSTs from anime. I was captivated by their sound that I contacted them for a possible email interview. Max, their drummer, graciously responded to my email and we started talking.
THE BEGINNING
Cloudian is a four-piece band hailing from Busan, South Korea and its comprised of Daul (Vocal), Max (Drums), Sue (Guitar), and Brighten (Vocal, Bass). To open the interview I asked the guys to introduce themselves and share with us a little background about the instrument/s they play.
Daul: Hi! I’m Daul, the vocalist of Cloudian. I have liked music since I was little, but started to professionally sing in a band since the summer of 2016. I can’t play other instruments, but I’m working on learning how to play guitar and piano.
Max: Sup! I’m Max and I play drums. I’ve been playing drums for about eight years now, I started playing drums at church and been playing them ever since. I also play a bit of ukulele, guitar and some bass.
Sue: I’m Sue, I’ve been playing guitar for nine years. I also play a bit of keyboard and violin.
Brighten: Hi guys I’m Brighten. I sing, play bass and write songs in Cloudian. I started to play instruments since I was twelve years old and started singing since a very young age. In addition, I play guitar, drums and piano.
The band Cloudian is relatively new, but the members have a long history in music. Cloudian was formed in Seoul, but currently resides in Busan, South Korea. Instinctively I ask them how they all met and started Cloudian and Brighten responds, “Daul and I met back in 2009 when we were attending the same middle school. Fast forward eight years and Daul was in a music label in Busan, but he wasn’t satisfied with the range of things he could do in there. I, on the other hand, was in other bands that had many problems. In May 2017 Daul left his label and I left the bands, a month later in June 2017 we formed Cloudian. We started Cloudian to make music without any external oppressions.”
Max continues to explain how they all came together, “We met Sue in January 2018 through the former drummer of Cloudian. I joined the band in May 2018 after the former drummer quit the band and Daul asked me if I could join the band. Daul and I knew each other since we were in the same label. I left the label before Daul did in January 2017.”
The name Cloudian is unique and although we can somehow decipher the meaning on our own I proceed to ask what does the name of the band, Cloudian, mean to them. They respond, “The word Cloudian is a combination of two words Cloud + ~ian (People of something). The meaning of the name is people above the clouds. It’s a name that shows our pursuit for dreams that are high as the sky, and also a worldview of our music.”
In order to pursue our dreams we sometimes have to work hard to overcome those unplanned hurdles. For most bands their biggest hurdle is always the financial aspect. Due to that, I always ask if they have other sources of income to compensate the lack of income from the band.
Daul: I am currently attending Busan National University and I’m majoring in mechanical engineering. While I finish my degree my parents support me, but I also do creative content through Mylive and broadcast myself singing or editing videos for Youtube.
Max: I’m currently in my freshman year at Busan University of Foreign Studies and I am majoring in English. To support myself I teach English to elementary children at a language institute and do private tutoring lessons in the same subject.
Sue: I do sound engineering, and I get support from my parents when I need it.
Brighten: I graduated already and have a degree in music. At the moment I’m focused and immersed in Cloudian, but I taught at Dong-Ju University in Busan a few years ago for a few semesters. My main lecture at the university was music copyright.
With busy schedules managing school, work and the band I wonder what they do in their spare time.
Daul: At the moment, school is on break until March, so in my spare time I like to watch films and travel.
Max: In my spare time I like playing games and enjoy model guns/weapons, so I often collect props and sometimes even cosplay.
Sue: I usually play games for a hobby.
Often bands in South Korea share members because the music scene is small compared to other countries. I proceed to inquire if any of the members have played or are playing in another band.
Max: I play drums in a band called Lose My Memory as a session player.
Brighten: I used to play in three bands at the same time as a bassist and a singer, but I quit them all because I’m trying to focus on Cloudian. In Cloudian I can play and compose the music that I’ve always wanted to do.
INSPIRATION
Frequently we are directly and indirectly influenced or inspired, in mostly every aspect of our lives (relationships, health, education etc.), by the media we’re exposed to. It’s no different for a band, in my opinion, as we often see bands take inspiration from other artists and media – books, films, games etc. The members recall what inspires them or influences their compositions.
Max: Usually games with epic storylines or well-produced scenes inspire me to write good songs. The visual elements in the games often give me clues to good lyrics and melodies.
Sue: If I have to choose, it would be the game League Of Legends, which I’m currently playing.
Brighten: There are so many bands and musicians that inspired me that I can’t even count them with my hands, but off the top of my head Green Day, Fairyland, Ellegarden, Whitesnake, Deep Purple, Dio, Michael Bolton, Michael Jackson, Mr.Big, Winery Dogs, Vow Wow and so on. I often get inspired by movies and anime as well.
Daul: It’s hard to pick just one. I have many bands that I like from around the world, and also good movies inspire me. Recently, I’ve been listening to a band called H A Lot and Bring Me The Horizon.
Max: I’m currently into Twenty One Pilots, Starset, and Bring Me The Horizon.
Sue: Recently, I’ve been listening to Zedd and Jason Richardson’s songs. And I’ve always listened to Park Hyo Shin’s songs.
Brighten: I’ve been listening to Brian Tyler, Hisaishi Joe, Bring Me The Horizon, Crystal Lake, Marvel J, and Huckleberry P.
If you head over to their youtube channel you’ll see that Cloudian sometimes covers Kpop songs, so I am wondering what kpop artists or songs they currently like.
Daul: BOL4 (볼빨간사춘기)’s “나의 사춘기에게” (to my puberty) is my favorite now!
Sue: Seventeen’s songs are good and fun to listen to!
Brighten: I’m listening to ITZY now and I’m going to do a cover video of them soon.
RockNSeoul: Which song/s are your favorite to cover live?
Daul: I’m running a youtube channel called “DaulMusic”, I do covers of Kpop, Jpop and many others.
Sue: Any good quality songs will do.
Max and Brighten: BTS’s Fake Love!
PROCESS
We’ve talked about their inspirations, influences and what they are currently listening to. I move on to ask about the process for composing their songs and specifically ask Daul to talk about his vocal style.
Daul: I usually set the theme for the song and imagine the storyline that would happen in that environment. I also make melodies thinking how I’d feel if I’m in that situation.
It’s been three years since I started to professionally sing in a band. I noticed early on that the charming point of my voice was a young boy-like sound so I thought I had similar advantages as Taka from One Ok Rock. In order to polish my vocals I try to learn to express emotions and dynamics of a song. I also like to research other artists for reference.
Max: I focus on the expressions rather than the theme or the storyline, but I recently realized that that particular approach to a song/lyric writing sometimes produces a cool song, but it’s hollow and generic so I’m trying to change my approach.
Sue: I try to write things in grand scale and edit from there.
Brighten: Well, it’s my secret formula so I can’t reveal it to the public… lol Just kidding!
I try to express things that are in my mind through instruments and my voice.
“THE UNKNOWN TALE”
Cloudian’s first release was this past fall 2018 with a full-length album called “The Unknown Tale.” Usually new bands tend to release singles or EPs before a full length-album, but Cloudian did otherwise. Brighten elaborates on their choice of length for their first release and the album itself. He says, “Since the beginning we already had lots of material and ideas that a full-length album was possible as our first release. In this first album we wanted to try different styles of music to see what best fit us and also get feedback from listeners. So ‘The Unknown Tale’ is an album that we are using as market research in a sense.”
As you go through the album the different styles in each song are evident, but there were two songs that stood out to me the most “Could You” and “신대륙 (New World).” Daul says, “ ‘Could You’ is a story about a man who broke up with his lover in a snowy winter. He’s walking down the snowy road and regretting ‘If I told her that I’m sorry…’ He cannot forget about her. I also broke up with my lover when I was writing this song so it has a lot of emotions I felt back then.”
Brighten adds, “ ‘New World’ was inspired by our circumstances back then. When we started Cloudian, we had to leave our former bands and labels, so we had to begin on our own. And it was challenging for us, so we’ve put what we felt back then and made it as a song.”
2019
You’ll currently find Cloudian working on their new EP which will be released mid-spring. Brighten says, “As I mentioned earlier, our first album was some sort of market research. Since the release we have actually narrowed down our music’s style and can be described as cinematic epic sound with rock music. You’ll hear more of this style in our new music which also includes elements of hip-hop, EDM and Djent.”
RockNSeoul: What are your plans for the rest of 2019?
Daul: I’ll do my best in school, youtube, and of course, the band. The new EP will be coming out in April, so look forward to that!
Max: Mo’ money, Mo’ gear. Period.
Sue: I want to do the things that are already planned, as well as increase my focus on my youtube channel.
Brighten: I’ll keep focusing on Cloudian and my upcoming August enlistment to the South Korean compulsory military service. Daul already finished his military service and Sue and Max have yet to start their military service.
There are a few questions we always like to ask the bands we talk to. First, since this article will also be published in Spanish, we like to ask what countries they’d like play in if they ever tour in Latin America.
Daul: Argentina. One of my friends on Penpal told me that the views are amazing! And the girls are pretty too!
Max: Brazil. I like the vibrant and energetic vibes there!
Sue: I like eating, I’d love to try some genuine Mexican cuisine! Mexico is a go for me!
Brighten: Definitely Brazil! I personally wanted to live in or visit Brazil for a long time now and I also have some friends there which i want to hang out with and party. Also, my ideal type of a woman is Latina, so I hope I can find someone to date there. Lol
Second, we are always looking for new music to listen to. So we asked if there are any other South Korean band/s they suggest we listen to.
Max: Lose My Memory, the band I’m a session drummer for right now. They do emo-core and it’s cool!
Daul: ClownUs, they play deathcore music, and it feels like watching a horror movie when they’re performing, and the drummer is cool AF.
To close the interview, we wanted to know, if someone is brand new to Cloudian and they want to check out their music, which song would they recommend.
All: Definitely, “Cloudian (The Unknown Tale)”, our album’s last song! It clearly tells you who we are, what we do, and why we do the things we do. It’s shows our core identity and it gives a sneak peek to Cloudian’s worldview, which is packed with myth-like wonderful settings. You’ll see this on our next full-album, but not the EP that will be coming out in April.

Por Encima de las Nubes con Cloudian (클라우디안)
A principios de febrero, me encontré a Cloudian en Kindie Español, una página de Facebook dedicada a compartir música de Corea del Sur para audiencias de habla hispana que residen principalmente en América Latina. Aunque soy una de las personas que administra la página, probablemente soy una de las menos activas, pero gracias a mi colega Cecille pude encontrarme con Cloudian.
En los próximos días, después de ver uno de sus videos musicales, me sumergí en su primer lanzamiento de larga duración, “The Unknown Tale”, que encontré en Youtube. El álbum tiene una mezcla de diferentes estilos musicales, el más evidente, sin embargo, son los elementos de sonido de las populares bandas de rock japonesas. Mi primera impresión fue la grandeza de las canciones que me hizo recordar esos OSTs de apertura/finalización del anime. Me cautivó su sonido que decidí contactarlos para una posible entrevista por correo electrónico. Max, su baterista, respondió amablemente a mi correo electrónico y comenzamos a hablar.
EL PRINCIPIO
Cloudian es una banda de cuatro miembros que proviene de Busan, Corea del Sur y está compuesta por Daul (Vocal), Max (Batería), Sue (Guitarra) y Brighten (Vocal, Bajo). Para abrir la entrevista, les pedí a los chicos que se presentaran y compartieran con nosotros un poco de información sobre los instrumentos que tocan.

Es un nombre que muestra nuestra búsqueda de sueños que son tan altos como el cielo, y también una cosmovisión de nuestra música.”
Para perseguir nuestros sueños, a veces tenemos que trabajar duro para superar esos obstáculos no planificados. Para la mayoría de las bandas, su mayor obstáculo es siempre el aspecto financiero. Debido a eso, siempre pregunto si tienen otras fuentes de ingresos para compensar la falta de ingresos de la banda.
Daul: Actualmente asisto a la Universidad Nacional de Busan y me especializo en ingeniería mecánica. Mientras termino mi carrera, mis padres me apoyan, pero también hago contenido creativo a través de Mylive y me transmito cantando o editando videos para Youtube.
Max: Actualmente estoy en mi primer año en la Universidad de Estudios Extranjeros de Busan y me especializo en inglés. Para mantenerme, enseño inglés a niños de primaria en un instituto de idiomas y doy clases particulares de tutoría sobre el mismo tema.

INSPIRACIÓN

En mi opinión, no es diferente para una banda, ya que a menudo vemos que las bandas se inspiran por otros artistas y medios de comunicación: libros, películas, juegos, etc. Los miembros recuerdan lo que los inspira o influye en sus composiciones.

PROCESO
Hemos hablado sobre sus inspiraciones, influencias y lo que están escuchando actualmente. Continúo y les preguntó sobre el proceso para componer sus canciones y específicamente le pido a Daul que hable sobre su estilo vocal.
Daul: Normalmente establezco el tema de la canción e imagino la trama que sucedería en ese entorno. También hago melodías pensando cómo me sentiría si estuviera en esa situación.
Han pasado tres años desde que comencé a cantar profesionalmente en una banda. Al principio me di cuenta de que el punto encantador de mi voz era un sonido de chico joven, así que pensé que tenía ventajas similares a las de Taka de One Ok Rock. Para pulir mi voz, trato de aprender a expresar las emociones y la dinámica de una canción. También me gusta investigar otros artistas para referencia.
Max: Me concentro en las expresiones en lugar del tema o la historia, pero recientemente me di cuenta de que ese enfoque particular de una canción /escritura lírica a veces produce una canción genial, pero es hueca y genérica, por lo que estoy tratando de cambiar mi enfoque.

“THE UNKNOWN TALE (LA HISTORIA DESCONOCIDA)”
El primer lanzamiento de Cloudian fue el otoño pasado 2018 con un álbum llamado “The Unknown Tale.” Generalmente, las nuevas bandas tienden a lanzar singles o EPs antes de un álbum de larga duración, pero Cloudian comenzó de otra manera. Brighten elabora en su elección de longitud para su primer lanzamiento y el álbum en sí. 2019
Actualmente encontrarás a Cloudian trabajando en su nuevo EP que se lanzará a mediados de la primavera. Brighten dice “Como mencioné anteriormente, nuestro primer álbum fue una especie de investigación de mercado. Desde el lanzamiento, hemos reducido el estilo de nuestra música y podemos describirlo como un sonido épico cinematográfico con música rock. Escucharás más de este estilo en nuestra nueva música, que también incluye elementos de hip-hop, EDM y Djent.”
RockNSeoul: ¿Cuáles son tus planes para el resto de 2019?
Daul: Haré lo mejor que pueda en la escuela, youtube y, por supuesto, la banda. El nuevo EP saldrá en abril, ¡así que espera eso!
Max: Más dinero, más equipo para tocar. Período.
Sue: Quiero hacer las cosas que ya están planeadas, así como aumentar mi enfoque en mi canal de YouTube.

Además, mi tipo ideal de mujer es latina, así que espero poder encontrar a alguien con quien salir. Jaja
En segundo lugar, siempre estamos buscando nueva música para escuchar. Entonces preguntamos si hay alguna otra banda surcoreana que sugieran que escuchemos.
Max: Lose My Memory, la banda en la que soy baterista de sesión por ahora. ¡Hacen emo-core y es genial!
Daul: ClownUs, tocan música deathcore, y se siente como ver una película de terror cuando se están presentando, y el baterista es genial.
