Rock 'N Seoul

While exploring the list for this years’ Zandari Festa, I came upon Flying Dog and immediately fell in love. The heavy guitar and gruff vocals, drew me in, and I had to hear more. I pretty much ran over to my iTunes to find their music and added it to my collection. Sometimes you just need some good old fashioned rock ‘n roll. There may be no tricks or gimmicks to Flying Dog and their music, but that just adds to the hard and heavy sound.  There is a classic, Black Sabbath-like strength to Flying Dog, and I can’t get enough.

We spoke to bassist Ham Kwon about their upcoming time at Zandari Festa.

We’d love to get an introduction to your band in your own words. Will you tell us who makes up your band, and how you describe your style of music?

We’re a rock trio from Seoul, Korea. Kyo-hyung Lee (guitar/vocals) and I met in the summer of 2007 and have been working together ever since. We had mostly played hard rock/heavy metal until Yang-gun (drums) joined the band in 2014. Yang-gun was definitely the last piece of the puzzle with lots of non-metal elements which contributed to forming the current style of the band. We aim to attract and please a wide range of listeners. Our style of music is basically a mixture of fun lyrics, easy choruses and serious guitar solos.

What does being invited to play at Zandari Festa 2017 mean to you?

It’s another milestone for the band. Lots of great musicians have played at Zandari, so we’re so proud to be part of it. We hope to show the best of us to people, and learn a lot from other musicians on the festival bill.

What is the best part of Zandari Festa for you?

It’s our first time playing, so we will find out what the best part is soon. Right now, we are very excited to see bands from all around the world. So that’s definitely going to be one of the best parts.

Who do you want to see play at Zandari Festa this year?

Flying Dog will fly to Mexico and play several shows this October. So we would like to see the musicians from Mexico – Deer Mx and Elis Paprika and The Black Pilgrims.

What can people at Zandari Festa expect from your performance?

You will be laughing, screaming and dancing with us. There is a particular song which really needs your participation, so please help us out if you’re at Zandari. And we must mention that at Zandari Festa, Crying Nut’s Sang-hyuk Lee will be playing the drums for us, temporarily replacing Yang who will stay in Mexico for the next few months. Crying Nut is who we grew up listening to, and Sang-hyuk wrote many of their best songs. It’s truly a dream-come-true moment for us. If you are already a fan of Flying Dog or love Crying Nut, then our Zandari Festa showcase is something you do not want to miss!

Entrevista de Zandari Festa: Flying Dog

 

Mientras exploraba la lista de Zandari Festa de este año, me encontré con Flying Dog y de inmediato me enamoré. La guitarra pesada y la voz ronca me atrajeron, y tuve que escuchar más. Corrí a mis iTunes para encontrar su música y los agregue a mi colección. A veces sólo necesitas un buen rock and roll a la antigua. Tiene un clásico sonido como Black Sabbath que le da fuerza a la música de Flying Dog, y no puedo escuchar su musica suficiente.

 

Hablamos con el bajista Ham Kwon acerca de su próximo concierto en Zandari Festa.

 

Nos encantaría tener una introducción a su banda en sus propias palabras. ¿Nos dirías quién esta en tu banda y cómo describen su estilo de música?

Somos un trío de rock de Seúl, Corea. Kyo-hyung Lee (guitarra / voces) y yo nos reunimos en el verano de 2007 y hemos estado trabajando juntos desde entonces. Habíamos tocado el hard rock/heavy metal hasta que Yang-gun (batería) se unió a la banda en 2014. Yang-gun fue definitivamente la última pieza del rompecabezas con muchos elementos no metálicos que contribuyeron a formar el estilo actual de la banda . Nuestro objetivo es atraer y complacer a una amplia gama de oyentes. Nuestro estilo de música es básicamente una mezcla de letras divertidas, coros fáciles y solos de guitarra.

 

¿Qué significa ser invitado a tocar en Zandari Festa 2017?

Es otro hito para la banda. Muchos de los grandes músicos han tocado en Zandari, así que estamos muy orgullosos de ser parte de ella. Esperamos mostrar lo mejor de nosotros a la gente, y aprender mucho de otros músicos en la factura del festival.

 

¿Cuál es la mejor parte de Zandari Festa para ti?

Es nuestra primera vez tocando allí, así que descubriremos cuál es la mejor parte pronto. En este momento, estamos muy emocionados de ver bandas de todo el mundo. Así que definitivamente va a ser una de las mejores partes.

 

¿A quién quieres ver en Zandari Festa este año?

Flying Dog volará a México y tocará varios espectáculos este octubre. Así que nos gustaría ver a los músicos de México – Deer Mx y Elis Paprika y The Black Pilgrims.

 

¿Qué puede esperar la gente de Zandari Festa de su presentación?

Ustedes estarán riendo, gritando y bailando con nosotros. Hay una canción particular que realmente necesita tu participación, así que por favor ayúdanos si estás en Zandari. Y debemos mencionar que en Zandari Festa, Sang-hyuk Lee, de Crying Nut, estará tocando la batería para nosotros, reemplazando temporalmente a Yang que permanecerá en México durante los próximos meses. Crying Nut es quien crecimos escuchando, y Sang-hyuk escribió muchas de sus mejores canciones. Es verdaderamente un momento de sueño para nosotros.
