Cy Recommends – Sima Kim

If you know me, this week’s recommendation can’t come as much of a surprise. I’ve been promoting this man’s music since 2014 (see my write-up of his MV for “If You Feel Like Me”), and it was only a matter of time before he showed up as one of my recommendations.

I’m not quite sure what I can say about Sima Kim that I haven’t said already. His music… there’s something so incredibly primal about the sounds he creates. At once they’re magnanimous in scope, exploring the very edges of what technology can do when pressed against the natural light of instrumentation. Then again he can pare sound down so much the listener is forced to lean in, as if being told a secret.

I can’t even fully remember how I even came across, Sima Kim. But what drew me to him is his ability to make music so… precious, make it seem rare and uncharted, an ancient island with cultures and languages we’ve yet to tap. He’s taken up the task of excavating the bottomless cavern of music and has come up with jewels the likes of which we’ve never seen—or heard—before.

There’s not much more I can say about this gifted musician without sounding like a complete fan girl. Especially since nothing I could say would truly capture what his music is and how it affects me. Please just do yourself a favor and absorb as much of his music as you possibly can. Your heart will thank you for it.
