Nest NADA: Kim Daniel (The Poles), Park Yoon Sick (Crying Nut), and Jang Kyeong Min (Lacuna)
This past month I was in South Korea and I had the opportunity to attend two Nest NADA programs over the course of my vacation. I came across Nest NADA a few months ago when they were gearing up to host their annual music festival and what caught my attention about Nest NADA is that they organize programs with disabled people in mind.
Since their humble beginning in 2012 they have actively and passionately pursued to offer an environment where disabled and non-disabled can freely enjoy themselves together while simultaneously attempting to breakdown preconceptions and prejudices society has for disabled individuals. Their empathizing views have generated innovative ideas that blend science, music and art organizing various programs like music and art festivals, forums, disability-empathy experience booths, barrier-free film screenings, outdoor acoustic live sessions and performances in the dark. They offer on-site sign language interpretation, real time LED pillars and smartphone subtitle services for the hearing impaired, as well as commentators for the sight-impaired. In addition, they keep experimenting with new systems such as vibrating speakers and attachable vibrating bracelets. They actively work with their disabled community to continue to modify and fine tune their programs for a better experience.
Their efforts to generate a more empathetic environment has touched me personally and I was thrilled to attend their programs this past month.
Kim Daniel (The Poles)
The first concert I attended was held on Thursday September 19th, 2019 at their venue in the heart of Hongdae. Their first guest of the night was singer-songwriter Kim Daniel, who is also the vocalist and guitarist for the band The Poles (더 폴스) and Wave to Earth. He has released three singles in the last two years as a soloist and has covered various songs which can be found on his soundcloud. Daniel is a performer that instantly captures your full attention with his inconsolable vocals. As I listened to his opening song “느릿느릿 지는 해를 바라보자 (Look at the Slowing Sun)” I felt the language barrier disappear and I was wrapped in emotions of calmness and a certain familiarity filled the air. I closed my eyes to take in the beautiful rendition of songs he performed and I teared up during “어느샌가 우리는 매일을 살아왔네 (Somewhere We Lived Every Day).” Despite not knowing the lyrics to the song I felt it and as I smiled my eyes welled up with tears. In spite of previously hearing his work I didn’t anticipate the impact of his music, he certainly has a way of opening himself up and permeating every aspect of your consciousness transmitting his feelings skillfully.
I also had the opportunity to see him perform with The Poles at Zandari Festa on Friday, September 27th, 2019 at Veloso. His set at Veloso with Lee Hwang Jae (bass) and Kim Kyung Bae (drums) was effervescent. Daniel seemed enthusiastic to be there even taking a moment to welcome us in English. He and his fellow bandmates emitted an amicable hearty energy that was deep-felt. Daniel from time to time would glance up at the audience and smile perhaps enjoying seeing us dancing to their performance. Halfway through their seraphic song “Sun Shower,” which was released earlier this year, I got butterflies in my stomach. This particular song captures Daniel’s ethereal vocals, they are haunting. Unreserved, I enjoyed every minute of their otherworldly Zandari Festa set.

Park Yoon Sick (Crying Nut)
The second performance of the night was from award-winning vocalist and guitarist Park Yoon Sick of the band Crying Nut (크라잉 넛). Park Yoon Sick is no stranger to Rock N Seoul, I’ve seen his band several times in the U.S. and South Korea. However, it was my first time seeing him as a soloist. For a moment I thought his set was going to be restrained given the atmosphere of Nest NADA’s venue. Nest NADA is a very intimate venue with about 20-25 seats. The front wall is draped in a beautiful gold copper curtain and the stage is made of hardwood floors giving it a cozy feel. However, Yoon Sick walks up to the stage with a beer in one hand and his guitar in the other. He ditches the chair and straight off the bat opens up his set with a charming Crying Nut song called “새 (Bird)” from their album Milk Cattle at the OK Corral. He eases us into his set and with a bright smile delivers each verse. Everyone is clapping and swaying in their seats, but as soon as the song ends we suddenly find ourselves screaming as Yoon Sick utters the words “마시자 마시자! (Let’s drink Let’s drink!)” and the mood changes from “Let’s have a nice evening” to “Let’s fucken party!” The room explodes in a roar of cheers and everyone has their hands in the air! With a “Yee-haw” Yoon Sick continues the party. Halfway through the performance Yoon Sick changes gears and for the first time I hear him sing entirely in English covering the Japanese band Ellegarden’s song “Make a Wish” before singing two more songs and ending the party with Crying Nut’s “Lego.”
Park Yoon Sick is one of those artists that genuinely loves and enjoys performing and it physically manifests giving his stage a life of its own. His voice commands attention and his body language induces dancing. Charming and friendly as ever, he immediately evokes laughter and cheers from any audience. Whenever I attend a concert with Yoon Sick at the helm I absolutely know I’ll have the best time no matter what.

Jang Kyeong Min (Lacuna)
The closing performance was from vocalist and guitarist Jang Kyeong Min from the up and coming band Lacuna (라쿠나). Lacuna released their second EP Cake this past April and Jang Kyeong Min has a few demos on his soundcloud which he performed at Nest NADA. It was my first time coming across Lacuna and I purposely didn’t listen to any songs prior to the gig because I wanted to listen to it for the first time live. Kyeong Min has a gentle demeanor, he is soft spoken and has cute gestures. He placed a stuffed animal wearing a bunny ears hat by the coffee table next to him as he was preparing which can give you an idea of his tender stage presence. With a shy smile he opened his set with “Cake,” but was perhaps nervous that he forgot the cords. With a bit of encouragement from the audience he recovered and did a wonderful rendition of the song. My favorite song, however, was “Montauk” from their first EP Incompleteness Dream ( 끝이 없는 꿈을 그대에게 줄게요). This track has a mellow melody, but Kyeong Min’s voice gives it a refreshing lift which captured my heart. Keep an eye out on Lacuna as they continue to grow in the indie scene, I hope next time I am in South Korea I can see Jang Kyeong Min perform with his bandmates.

El mes pasado estuve en Corea del Sur y tuve la oportunidad de asistir a dos programas de Nest NADA en el transcurso de mis vacaciones. Me encontré a Nest NADA hace unos meses cuando se estaban preparando para organizar su festival anual de música y lo que me llamó la atención sobre Nest NADA es que organizan programas pensando en las personas con discapacidad.
Desde sus humildes comienzos en 2012, han perseguido activamente y apasionadamente ofrecer un ambiente en el que los discapacitados y los no discapacitados puedan disfrutar libremente juntos y al mismo tiempo intentan romper preconceptos y prejuicios que la sociedad tiene para las personas con discapacidad. Sus puntos de vista empáticos han generado ideas innovadoras que combinan la ciencia, la música y el arte organizando diversos programas como festivales de música y arte, foros, cabinas de experiencia de empatía con la discapacidad, proyecciones de películas sin barreras, sesiones acústicas al aire libre en vivo y actuaciones en la oscuridad. Ofrecen interpretación de lenguaje de señas en el sitio, pilares LED en tiempo real y servicios de subtítulos para teléfonos inteligentes para personas con discapacidad auditiva, así como comentaristas para personas con discapacidad visual. Además, siguen experimentando con nuevos sistemas como altavoces vibrantes y pulseras vibratorias conectables. Trabajan activamente con su comunidad discapacitada para continuar modificando y afinando sus programas para una mejor experiencia.
Sus esfuerzos por generar un ambiente más empático me han conmovido personalmente y estaba encantada de asistir a sus programas el mes pasado.
Kim Daniel (The Poles)
El primer concierto al que asistí se realizó el jueves 19 de septiembre de 2019 en su sala de conciertos en el corazón de Hongdae. Su primer invitado de la noche fue el cantante y compositor Kim Daniel, quien también es vocalista y guitarrista de la banda The Poles (더 폴스) y Wave to Earth. Ha lanzado tres sencillos en los últimos dos años como solista y ha cubierto varias canciones que se pueden encontrar en su Soundcloud. Daniel es un artista que captura instantáneamente toda tu atención con su voz inconsolable. Mientras escuchaba su canción de apertura “느릿느릿 지는 해를 바라보자 (Mira el Sol que se Apaga)” Sentí que la barrera del idioma desaparecía y quedé envuelta en emociones de calma y cierta familiaridad llenó el aire. Cerré los ojos para apreciar la hermosa interpretación de canciones que canto y lloré durante “어느샌가 우리는 매일을 살아왔네 (En Algún Lugar Donde Vivimos Todos los Días).” A pesar de no saber la letra de la canción, la sentí y, mientras sonreía, mis ojos se llenaron de lágrimas. A pesar de haber escuchado su trabajo anteriormente, no anticipé el impacto de su música, ciertamente tiene una manera de abrirse y penetrar cada aspecto de tu conciencia transmitiendo sus sentimientos hábilmente.
También tuve la oportunidad de verlo cantar con The Poles en Zandari Festa el viernes 27 de septiembre de 2019 en Veloso. Su set en Veloso con Lee Hwang Jae (bajo) y Kim Kyung Bae (batería) fue efervescente. Daniel parecía entusiasmado de estar allí incluso tomándose un momento para darnos la bienvenida en inglés. Él y sus compañeros de banda emitieron una energía cordial amistosa que se sintió profundamente. Daniel de vez en cuando miraba a la audiencia y sonreía, tal vez disfrutaba de vernos bailar. A mitad de su canción seráfica “Sun Shower (Lluvia de Sol)”, que fue lanzada a principios de este año, me dieron mariposas en el estómago. Esta canción en particular captura la voz etérea de Daniel, es inolvidable. Sin reservas, disfruté cada minuto de su set de Zandari Festa que fue de otro mundo.

Park Yoon Sick (Crying Nut)
La segunda actuación de la noche fue del galardonado vocalista y guitarrista Park Yoon Sick de la banda Crying Nut (크라잉 넛). Park Yoon Sick no es ajeno a Rock N Seoul, he visto a su banda varias veces en los Estados Unidos y Corea del Sur. Sin embargo, era la primera vez que lo veía como solista. Por un momento pensé que su set sería un poco restringido dada la atmósfera del lugar de Nest NADA. Nest NADA es un lugar muy íntimo con alrededor de 20-25 asientos. La pared frontal está cubierta con una hermosa cortina de cobre dorado y el escenario está hecho de piso de madera que le da una sensación acogedora. Sin embargo, Yoon Sick sube al escenario con una cerveza en una mano y su guitarra en la otra. Él abandona la silla y directamente desde el bate abre su set con una encantadora canción de Crying Nut llamada “새 (Bird)” de su álbum Milk Cattle en el OK Corral. Nos introduce a su set muy calmadamente y con una sonrisa brillante entrega cada verso. Todos están aplaudiendo y moviéndose en sus asientos, pero tan pronto como termina la canción, de repente nos encontramos gritando cuando Yoon Sick pronuncia las palabras “마시자 마시자! (¡Bebamos, bebamos!)” y el estado de ánimo cambia de “¡Tengamos una buena noche!” a “¡Estamos de fiesta!”. Con un “Yee-haw”, Yoon Sick continúa la fiesta. A mitad de la presentación, Yoon Sick cambia de marcha y por primera vez lo escuchó cantar completamente en inglés cubriendo la canción de la banda japonesa Ellegarden “Make a Wish” antes de cantar dos canciones más y terminar la fiesta con “Lego” de Crying Nut.
Park Yoon Sick es uno de esos artistas que realmente ama y disfruta actuar y se manifiesta físicamente dando a su escenario una vida propia. Su voz llama la atención y su lenguaje corporal induce a bailar. Encantador y amigable como siempre, inmediatamente evoca risas y vítores de cualquier audiencia. Cada vez que asisto a un concierto con Yoon Sick al timón, sé que me la pasaré de lo mejor sin importar nada.

Jang Kyeong Min (Lacuna)
La actuación de cierre fue del vocalista y guitarrista Jang Kyeong Min de la banda emergente Lacuna (라쿠 나). Lacuna lanzó su segundo EP Cake (Pastel) en abril pasado y Jang Kyeong Min tiene algunos demos en su Soundcloud que tocó en Nest NADA. Era la primera vez que supe de Lacuna y a propósito no escuché ninguna canción antes del concierto porque quería escuchar su música por primera vez en vivo. Kyeong Min tiene un comportamiento amable, es de voz suave y tiene gestos lindos. Colocó un animal de peluche con un sombrero de orejas de conejo junto a la mesa de café en el escenario mientras se preparaba, lo que puede darte una idea de su tierna presencia en el escenario. Con una sonrisa tímida abrió su set con “Cake (Pastel)”, pero tal vez estaba nervioso porque se le olvidó cómo tocarla. Con un poco de aliento de la audiencia, se recuperó e hizo una interpretación maravillosa de la canción. Mi canción favorita, sin embargo, fue “Montauk” de su primer EP Sueño Incompleto (끝이 없는 꿈을 그대에게 줄게요). Esta canción tiene una melodía suave, pero la voz de Kyeong Min le da un impulso refrescante que capturó mi corazón. Estén atentos a Lacuna mientras continúa creciendo en la escena indie, espero que la próxima vez que esté en Corea del Sur pueda ver a Jang Kyeong Min actuar con sus compañeros de banda.
