Cold Cherry (차가운 체리) has been a band I’ve known for a very long time. They were introduced to me through a friend from Seoul, South Korea. The band has had a lineup change in the past. They started with two members and later added a drummer. After the original members withdrew they recruited a guitarist, and now they are a duo comprised of Kim Bbal Kang (vocalist) and Moon Seon Su (guitarist). They play a mixture of pop, acoustic pop, and modern rock. Through a mutual friend and graphic artist of Cold Cherry, I had the opportunity to interview the vocalist Kim Bbal Kang who started the band back in 2011. After working with a broadcasting music company and being financially stable he decided to start Cold Cherry to make is own style of music, which had been a longtime dream of his.
Apart from Cold Cherry, Kim Bbal Kang also launched a project band called De Moon (드문). De Moon is a band consisting of Kim Deok Won from Have a Tea (해브어티) and Bbal Kang (as opposed to Cold Cherry Bbal Kang only participates as a vocalist).
As I was doing my research for this interview I read somewhere that the name Cold Cherry was inspired by a line in the American show Dexter, so I asked Kim Bbal Kang how the name ecompasses the sound and style of Cold Cherry. He says, “In the television show Dexter the word Cold Cherry comes out. A killer keeps a dead body in the fridge and feels joy when he looks at it. It is a very crazy and grim situation, but it is a precious trophy for the killer. I got the motif from there. I wanted to do that kind of music even though many people do not agree. I wanted to give someone some valuable music.”
Although Kim’s inspiration might have come from a very disturbing situation, I wondered how he approached songwriting in order to make his interpretation of valuable music. Kim explains, “Though it is not defined as one thing, the central thing is the lyrics and the melody that goes with it. The most important thing is in the lyrics. I do not start work unless the concept of the lyrics and central words are on point. Of course, there are times when written lyrics are beautiful already, but that is very rare.”
As for music inspirations, he says, “I really listen to a lot of music and I like a lot of music in the world. What Cold cherry expresses does not follow the concept of any particular person. If you think too hard about what we sound like, you may not feel the identity of our music. However, I do sing in various genres and styles, which gives Cold Cherry it’s identity. In fact, you’ll find out if you listen to all the Cold Cherry releases or even see our concerts at once. I try a lot of concepts, but I will not feel a sense of heterogeneity. It have the ability to make various colors my own.”
In regards to his current music playlists artists, he reveals, “I’m listening to Macy Gray and System of a Down’s music a lot these days. These two musicians couldn’t be more different. Hahaha I’m like this all the time.”
One thing that I love about Cold Cherry is that they have consistently released music since they started, whether it was a single, EP, or album. They have kept their fans engaged throughout their long career. Around 2013 a drama called “Heirs” came out in South Korea, and one of Cold Cherry’s songs was featured in the soundtrack. The song “Growing Pains 2 (성장통 2)” has consistently been at the top of Google searches for Cold Cherry since then. Kim talks about how the song has endured.
“When I think of it, I think it is a song born from a very unfortunate situation. Our song, which only spread on the underground, had finally entered the overground, but it was received with many discriminations due to the nature of the South Korean music market. Our song wasn’t made into a single album because idol songs are prefered by default, big companies are like that. At that time, the Sewol ferry disaster happened and the country was in mourning and it was no time for us to promote a single in such a grief-stricken time for us. Despite all that the song endured and naturally grew to be loved by many people. I think it is the power of the song and it is still much talked about.
It was recently put on karaoke as well due to fans requests. (In South korea, songs that are popular are requested to be added to karaoke.) It is not an explosive love song, but I think it is a song that will be loved by a handful of people for a long time. This song has become like the murderer’s body trophy for Cold Cherry. I am very proud of it.”
I also wanted to ask him about a sort of secret series that spans over several years. “Love Song,” which I think was his first song that came out back in 2011 in a compilation CD called Cafe: Night & Day; “End Song,” which was released in 2013 as part of Bright #1 compilation; and “Sweet Song,” which was released in 2016 as a single.
“It is not in any album of Cold Cherry, but it is a series of songs made when someone commissioned them for a project. In fact, it is very business-like songs. ‘Love Song’ and ‘End Song’ were commissions for compilation albums. ‘Sweet Song,’ on the other hand, was originally made for advertisement, but eventually the project was canceled. Since it was already made, it was released as a single,” he elaborates.
In my opinion, 2017 was a big year for Cold Cherry because they released their first full-length album, Jamais Vu (Never Seen), and later that year they released an EP called Special Album Seon Ddeut Col.
“Unfortunately, the guitarist who was on ‘Jamais Vu’ left after the album was completed. A new guitarist was recruited. During the band’s adjustment period I was taking a break while our new guitarist was preparing to release a personal project EP called ‘Seon Ddeut Col,’ but he asked me to do the vocals for this project. At first I was supposed to sing only one song, but as we started to work more and more, we found a common feeling to Cold Cherry. So I ended up singing for the whole EP, and he later suggested we release it under the Cold Cherry name. It is a collaboration album of ‘Cold Cherry’ and ‘Seon Ddeut Col’.”
In March of this year, the band released a single called “The Science.”
As for the rest of the year he hopes to periodically release music like they have in the past. “I want to always listen to good songs, and this mind[set] has not changed this year.” he adds.
In regards to other aspirations, he says, “Prior to this band, I was a sound engineer and now work as an audio/live engineer at church. I am a person who is not funny. There is no other talent or hobby except music. I want to do my own business later. For example, like a live cafe? I want to escape the pain of creation. Hahaha”
As some of you may know already I always like to ask three questions before I end our interviews. First, since this article will also be published in Spanish for our Spanish-speaking readers in Latin America, I like to ask what countries they’d like play in if they ever tour in Latin America. He says, “I always like it when we go somewhere. I’ve never chosen a place to perform in, rather I’ve played in places where they want us to perform. If there is a big or small country or unknown tiny city in Latin America that would like for us to sing no matter the size of the audience that is where I would like to go.”
Second, we are always looking for new music to listen to. So we asked if there are any other South Korean band/s he suggests we listen to. “I recommend you to listen to my other band De Moon (드문). I mean it.”
To close the interview, we wanted to know, if someone is brand-new to Cold Cherry and they want to check out their music, which song would he recommend.
“Even if I keep thinking about it, there’s only one song that comes to mind, ‘Growing Pains 2 (성장통2).’ This song captures who we are and acts like a business card. If you like us after hearing this song, you have become my frozen body. Hahaha”

Observando Cuerpos Congelados con Cold Cherry (차가운 체리)
Cold Cherry (차가운 체리) ha sido una banda que conozco desde hace mucho tiempo. Me la presentaron a través de un amigo de Seúl, Corea del Sur. La banda ha tenido un cambio de miembros en el pasado. Comenzaron con dos miembros y luego agregaron un baterista. Después de que los miembros originales se retiraron, reclutaron a un guitarrista, y ahora son un dúo compuesto por Kim Bbal Kang (vocalista) y Moon Seon Su (guitarrista). Tocan una mezcla de pop, pop acústico y rock moderno. A través de un amigo mutuo y artista gráfico de Cold Cherry, tuve la oportunidad de entrevistar al vocalista Kim Bbal Kang, quien comenzó la banda en 2011. Después de trabajar con una compañía de transmisión de música y estar financieramente estable, decidió comenzar Cold Cherry para componer su estilo propio de música, que había sido un sueño suyo durante mucho tiempo.
Además de Cold Cherry, Kim Bbal Kang también lanzó una banda de proyecto llamada De Moon (드문). De Moon es una banda formada por Kim Deok Won de Have a Tea (해브어티) y Bbal Kang (a diferencia de Cold Cherry Bbal Kang solo participa como vocalista).
Mientras realizaba mi investigación para esta entrevista, leí en alguna parte que el nombre de Cold Cherry se inspiró en una línea del programa estadounidense Dexter, así que le pregunté a Kim Bbal Kang cómo el nombre compila el sonido y el estilo de Cold Cherry. Él dice, “En el programa de televisión Dexter aparece la palabra Cold Cherry. Un asesino guarda un cadáver en la nevera y siente alegría cuando lo mira. Es una situación muy loca y sombría, pero es un trofeo precioso para el asesino. Tome el tema de allí. Quería hacer ese tipo de música a pesar de que muchas personas no están de acuerdo. Quería darle a alguien algo de música valiosa.”
Si bien la inspiración de Kim pudo provenir de una situación muy inquietante, me pregunté cómo se acercó a la composición para poder interpretar música valiosa. Kim explica, “Aunque no se define como una sola cosa, lo principal es la letra y la melodía que la acompaña. Lo más importante está en las letras. No comienzo a trabajar a menos que el concepto de las letras y las palabras centrales estén en el punto. Por supuesto, hay momentos en que las letras escritas ya son hermosas, pero eso es muy raro.”
En cuanto a las inspiraciones musicales, dice, “Realmente escucho mucha música y me gusta mucha música en el mundo. Lo que expresa Cold cherry no sigue el concepto de ninguna persona en particular. Si piensas demasiado acerca de cómo sonamos, es posible que no sientas la identidad de nuestra música. Sin embargo, sí cantó en varios géneros y estilos, lo que da identidad a Cold Cherry. De hecho, sabrás si escuchas todos los lanzamientos de Cold Cherry o si ves todos nuestros conciertos a la vez. Intento muchos conceptos, pero no siento una sensación de heterogeneidad. Tengo la capacidad de hacer varios colores míos.”
En lo que respecta a los artistas en sus listas de reproducción de música, revela, “Estoy escuchando mucho la música de Macy Gray y System of a Down estos días. Estos dos músicos no podrían ser más diferentes. Jajaja soy así todo el tiempo.”
Una cosa que me encanta de Cold Cherry es que han lanzado música constantemente desde que comenzaron, ya sea un single, un EP o un álbum. Han mantenido a sus fanáticos entretenidos a lo largo de su larga carrera. Alrededor de 2013 salió un drama llamado “Herederos (Heirs)” en Corea del Sur, y una de las canciones de Cold Cherry apareció en el drama. La canción “Growing Pains 2 (성장통 2)” ha estado constantemente en la parte superior de las búsquedas de Google para Cold Cherry desde entonces. Kim habla de cómo la canción ha sobrevivido todos estos anos.
“Cuando lo pienso, creo que es una canción nacida de una situación muy desafortunada. Nuestra canción, que solo se difundió en el underground, finalmente tuvo éxito, pero fue recibida con muchas discriminaciones debido a la naturaleza del mercado musical surcoreano. Nuestra canción no se convirtió en un solo álbum porque las canciones de ídolos se prefieren por defecto, las grandes compañías son así. En ese momento, ocurrió el desastre del ferry de Sewol y el país estaba de luto y no era el momento para que promo viéramos un sencillo en un momento tan doloroso para nosotros. A pesar de todo naturalmente creció para ser amada por muchas personas. Creo que es el poder de la canción y todavía se habla mucho de ella.
Recientemente se puso en el karaoke también debido a las peticiones de los fans. (En Corea del Sur, se solicita que las canciones que son populares se agreguen al karaoke). No es una canción de amor explosiva, pero creo que es una canción que será amada por un puñado de personas durante mucho tiempo. Esta canción se ha convertido como en el trofeo del cuerpo del asesino para Cold Cherry. Estoy muy orgulloso de ella.”
También quería preguntarle sobre una especie de serie secreta que abarca varios años. “Love Song”, que creo que fue su primera canción que salió en 2011 en un CD recopilatorio llamado Cafe: Night & Day; “End Song”, que se lanzó en 2013 como parte de la compilación de Bright # 1; y “Sweet Song”, que se lanzó en 2016 como single.
“No están en ningún álbum de Cold Cherry, pero es una serie de canciones creadas cuando alguien nos encarga un proyecto. De hecho, son canciones muy de negocios. ‘Love Song’ y ‘End Song’ fueron encargos para los álbumes de compilación. ‘Sweet Song’, por otro lado, se hizo originalmente para publicidad, pero finalmente el proyecto se canceló. Como ya se hizo, se lanzó como single,” explica.
En mi opinión, 2017 fue un gran año para Cold Cherry porque lanzaron su primer álbum de larga duración, Jamais Vu (Never Seen), y más tarde ese año lanzaron un EP llamado Special Album Seon Ddeut Col.
“Desafortunadamente, el guitarrista que estaba en Jamais Vu se fue después de que se completó el álbum. Un nuevo guitarrista fue reclutado. Durante el período de ajuste de la banda, me estaba tomando un descanso mientras nuestro nuevo guitarrista se preparaba para lanzar un EP de proyecto personal llamado Seon Ddeut Col, pero él me pidió que fuera el vocalista para este proyecto. Al principio se suponía que solo debía cantar una canción, pero a medida que comenzamos a trabajar más y más, encontramos un sentimiento común a Cold Cherry. Así que terminé cantando para todo el EP, y luego me sugirió que lo lanzáramos con el nombre de Cold Cherry. Es un álbum de colaboración de Cold Cherry y Seon Ddeut Col.”
En marzo de este año, la banda lanzó un single llamado “The Science”.
En cuanto al resto del año, espera lanzar periódicamente música como lo han hecho en el pasado. “Quiero escuchar siempre las buenas canciones, y esta mentalidad no ha cambiado este año,” agrega.
Respecto a otras aspiraciones, dice, “Antes de esta banda, era ingeniero de sonido y ahora trabajo como ingeniero de audio y en vivo en la iglesia. Soy una persona que no es graciosa. No hay otro talento o afición excepto la música. Quiero hacer mi propio negocio más tarde. Por ejemplo, como un café en vivo? Quiero escapar del dolor de la creación. Jajaja”
Como algunos de ustedes ya saben, siempre me gusta hacer tres preguntas antes de terminar nuestras entrevistas. Primero, dado que este artículo también se publicará en español para nuestros lectores de habla hispana en América Latina, me gusta preguntar en qué países les gustaría tocar si alguna vez viajan a América Latina. Él dice, “Siempre me gusta cuando vamos a algún lugar. Nunca he elegido un lugar para tocar, sino que he tocado en lugares donde los fans quieren que actuemos. Si hay un país grande o pequeño o una pequeña ciudad desconocida en Latinoamérica, y les gustaría que cantemos me gustaria ir sin importar el tamaño de la audiencia.”
En segundo lugar, siempre estamos buscando nueva música para escuchar. Entonces pregunte si hay alguna otra banda surcoreana que sugieran que escuchemos. “Te recomiendo que escuches a mi otra banda De Moon (드문). Lo digo en serio.”
Para cerrar la entrevista, queríamos saber si alguien es nuevo a Cold Cherry y quieren escuchar su música, qué canción recomendarían.
“Incluso si sigo pensando en ello, solo hay una canción que me viene a la mente, ‘Growing Pains 2 (성장통 2)’. Esta canción captura quiénes somos y actúa como una tarjeta de presentación. Si te gusta la banda después de escuchar esta canción, te has convertido en mi cuerpo congelado. Jajaja”
