Rock 'N Seoul

I’ve been a fan of Wings of the Isang for a few years now, and was exceptionally lucky to be able to catch them playing at Zandari Festa last year when I attended. When performed live, the music is transformative and hypnotic. I found myself closing my eyes and being swept away in the experience. Very few bands can make me lose focus like that during a show, and this just proves the ethereal magic of Wings of the Isang.

While listening to the album Stream of Consciousness, I find myself visualizing colors and starscapes, being swept away into a world of dancing light and sound while also simultaneously lulled into a meditative emotional state. There is really nothing quite like the bands blend of post hardcore, & shoegaze. We were lucky to be able to ask the leader of the band, Jung-Min some questions ahead of their appearance at this years Zandari Festa. He was amazing enough to reply in both Korean & English, so we have kept both, and hope you enjoy.

 

Hello! While Rock ‘N Seoul is familiar with who you are, will you please introduce yourselves in your own words for our readers?

Hello, 시간과 공간을 노래하는 밴드 이상의날개다. 우리는 시간과 공간에 펼쳐져 있는 삶과 죽음, 빛과 어둠, 순간과 영원, 관념과 실재, 만남과 헤어짐, 의미와 무의미 등의 아름다움을 노래한다.

2011년 3월에 EP [상실의시대] 로 데뷔했고, 2017년 9월 정규앨범 [의식의흐름] 을 발매했다. 현재 문정민 (Guitar/Vocal), 김태봉 (Guitar), 하태진 (Bass), 이충훈 (Drums) 4인조로 구성되어 있다.

Hello, we are Wings of the ISANG, a band that sings through time and space. Our band sings and plays the dark side of beauty tangled in time and space; Life and Death, Light and Darkness, Moment and Eternity, Idea and Reality, Relation and Farewell, Meaningfulness and Meaninglessness, and so on.

We debuted with our EP [Lost], in March of 2011, and released our regular album [Stream of Consciousness] in September 2017. We are a band of four: Jung Min Moon (Guitar / Vocal), Tae Bong Kim (Guitar), Tai Jin Ha (Bass) and Choong Hoon Lee (Drums).

There are a lot of great visuals in your music videos. Do you have an artist that you work with for them? Do you get to have input in what goes into the videos?

모든 뮤직비디오의 내용에 대한 것은 내(문정민)가 먼저 아이디어를 냈고, 그 진행 과정에 대한 아트 디렉션도 직접 했다. 멋진 작가를 만나 좋은 뮤직비디오 작품을 만들 수있었는데 사실 그 중 한명은 친동생이고, 다른 한명은 동생의 후배이다. 친동생은 3D 작업에 강점이 있어서 그런 작업을 주로 맡았고, 후배 작가는 정말 개성있는 드로잉 기술을 가지고 있어서 드로잉에 관련된 작업을 주로 맡았다. 이상의날개의 음악은 아무래도 영상과 함께 있을 때 굉장히 시너지 효과가 있기 때문에 앞으로도 지속적으로 같이 작업해나갈 예정이다. 조만간 새 싱글 발매에 맞춰 2개의 뮤직비디오가 더 공개될 예정이다.

The ideas for the contents of all music videos came from me and I also gave art direction during the working process. We were able to produce great music videos by meeting two amazing artists, one of which is my brother and the other is his college friend. My brother has specialty in working with 3D graphics so he was in charge of that line of work and the other artist has a very unique drawing technique so he has been responsible for those. There is no doubt that the music of Wings of the Isang creates synergy with visuals, so we are planning on continuing the collaborations. We are planning on releasing two more music videos along with the new single album soon.

What is your music writing process like? Do you collaborate and work together, or is the music written mostly by one member?

곡 작업은 내가 보통 코드진행이나 송폼, 보컬멜로디의 스케치를 해오면 합주할 때 멤버들과 함께 들으며 괜찮은 느낌의 스케치를 골라서 완성해가는 편이다. 예전에는 내가전부 편곡까지 해오는 경우가 많았지만 요즘엔 대부분 멤버들과 함께 편곡해 간다. 스케치 해 온 곡 중에 멤버들이 그다지 좋아하지 않아서 더이상 작업하지 않는 곡들도 있고, 편곡과 합주를 꽤 진행했음에도 공연이나 앨범에 담지 않고 폐기하는 곡들도 있다. 이상의날개 음악만의 개성을 갖기 위해 내 개인적으로도 고민과 연구를 많이 하지만요즘엔 멤버들과도 함께 늘 얘기하고 고민하는 편이다.

I come up with chords, song forms and vocal sketches and we pick out the ones that sound good during band rehearsals. I used make the songs, and even do the rearrangement, but recently we have been rearranging the songs together. There are sketches that we stopped working on because the members didn’t like them enough, and there are songs we leave out from the album even though they have gone through the process of rearrangement and rehearsals. I spend a lot of time and effort in trying to maintain the uniqueness that music of Wings of the ISANG has, but recently the members are also constantly partaking in this process and in discussion together.

What were your initial reactions last year to your nomination, and then winning of Best Modern Rock Album at the Korean Music Awards?

솔직히 앨범 작업 초창기에 내가 멤버들에게 한국대중음악상의 수상자가 되지는 못해도 후보에는 꼭 오를 수 있는 앨범을 만들자고 이야기했었다. 그때 멤버들이 다들 반신반의 했었다. 앨범이 발매되고 발매 직후부터 좋은 반응들과 피드백이 오는 것을 보고 후보에 오를 수 있을 것 같다는 자신감이 생겼다.

한국대중음악상 후보에 올라 시상식 현장에 갔을때 오늘 상을 받지 못해도 괜찮다고 생각했고, 여기에 이렇게 참석한 것만으로도 큰 영광이라고 생각했다. 운좋게도 상까지받게 되어서 음악 생활하면서 제일 행복한 경험을 했다. 시상식에서 수상소감으로도 얘기했지만 2011년 EP [상실의시대] 발매 직전, 뮤지션이 아닌 관람객 신분으로 한국대중음악상 시상식 날에 그 곳 현장 3층에 앉아있었다. 그때 언젠가 나에게도 이런 날이 올 수 있을까 막연한 꿈을 꾸었다. 그것이 실현되었다는 것이 가장 뿌듯하고 감격스러웠다. 나같이 보잘 것 없는 지극히 평범한 뮤지션도 상을 받았으니 그 어떤 뮤지션도 받을 수 있다고 생각한다. 오늘도 자신의 음악을 위해 묵묵히 작업하고 있는 뮤지션들에게용기를 주고 늘 응원하고 싶다.

Honestly, towards the beginning of the album preparation stages, I encouraged the members to create an album that can be nominated for the Best Modern Rock Album at the Korean Music Awards, even though we may not win it. At the time, none of the members truly believed that it could happen. We gained confidence when we were seeing good reactions and feedback right after the album release.

We thought that it would be fine if we didn’t win the award when we were at the Korean Music Awards ceremony and thought that just being there was an honor. We had the happiest experience of our lives as musicians by fortunately receiving the award. As I said at the award ceremony, right before the release of the album [Lost] in 2011, I was at the ceremony, sitting on the third floor, not as a musician but as an audience. At the time, I had high hopes for a moment like this. I was especially proud and happy for that dream to have become a reality. If a plain musician like me can receive the award, I think any other musicians are also capable of doing so. I want to give courage and support to the musicians constantly working to pursue their own music.

During this years’ award ceremony Lee Lang notoriously sold her award to help her monthly artists’ income. It raised awareness for the plight of musicians in Korea, but there is still a lot of work to do. What do you think of the Korean indie music scene? Do you think there is any way to help fans get more involved and return to supporting bands?

그냥 뮤지션의 삶이 돌아가는 방식은 똑같다. 음악을 만들면 그것을 누군가 듣고, 앨범을 사고 공연을 보러 오는 것이다. 방탄소년단, 워너원 같은 뮤지션들이 음악을 만들면최소 수만, 수십만명의 팬들이 음악을 듣고 앨범을 사고 공연을 보러 간다. 그래서 그들의 뮤지션으로서의 삶은 잘 굴러갈 수 있다. 하지만 우리 같은 음악을 하는 소위 인디또는 홍대 뮤지션들은 수백명의 팬들을 만나기도 사실 쉽지가 않다. 그것의 문제가 우리 뮤지션 자신에게 있는지 아니면 우리의 그다지 음악이 들을만 하지 않거나 퀄리티가낮아서 그런지 아니면 시스템 자체에 있는지는 모르겠지만 어쨌든 그런 엄청난 리스너 들의 숫자 차이가 곧 뮤지션의 삶에 직결한다고 생각한다.

더 많은 사람들이 CD 많이 사주시고, 공연에 많이 찾아주시길 바라는 수밖에 없지만 나는 개인적으로 돈을 많이 벌고 풍족한 삶을 영위하기 위해서 음악을 하는 것은 아니기에 그렇게 살지 못하더라도 조금은 더 가치 있는 음악을 만들고 그 음악이 사람들에게 다가갈 수 있다면 나는 그것으로도 괜찮은 뮤지션의 삶이라고 생각한다. 그래서 솔직히이랑 씨의 그 퍼포먼스에 그렇게 공감하지 않았다. 특히 그 공간이 한국대중음악상 시상식이어서 더 그랬다. 수많은 뮤지션들이 돈과 물질적인 것보다는 더 가치 있는 음악을만들기 위해서 오늘도 연구하고 고민하고 작업하고 있다. 만약 나에게 음악적인 가치로 수백, 수천만원의 돈과 한국대중음악상의 명예, 이 둘 중에 하나를 선택하라고 하면 나는 한국대중음악상을 선택할 것이다.

All musicians live the same way of life. If a musician creates a song, someone will listen to it, buy the album and go see the performances. If musicians like BTS and WannaOne release an album, thousands of fans will listen, buy their album and go to their performances. This allows them to maintain a successful life as musicians. However, for those so called indie or Hongdae musicians, it’s not easy to meet even a couple hundred fans. I’m not sure if the problem lies on us indie musicians or the seemingly low quality of the music or on the system itself, but the drastic difference in the number of listeners has a direct impact in a musician’s life.

I can only hope for more people to buy albums and come to the performances, but since I am not making music for the sake of earning a lot of money or living a fulfilled life, if I am able to make meaningful music that people can sympathize and relate with, I think that itself is a pretty good life of a musician. Thus, it was hard for me to relate to Lee Lang’s performance, especially because it was at the Korean Music Awards. A lot of musicians strive to create meaningful and valuable music, not for money and material goods. If I have to choose between the Korean Music Award and the translated monetary value of my music, I will definitely choose the award.

You’re playing Zandari again this year, ((I was there to see you last year, and I’m so happy about it!)) what do you think sets Zandari apart from other music festivals?

우리 이상의날개는 잔다리 페스타 외에는 아직 록 페스티벌에 나가본 적이 없다. 우리가 아직 많이 부족한지 그 어느 페스티벌에서도 불러준 적이 없다. 앨범을 잘 만들고 좋은 평가를 받으면 불러주겠지 생각하고 온 열정을 다해 앨범을 만들었지만 아직도 그 어느 곳에서도 소식이 없다. 우리 음악이 아무래도 길고 루즈하고 또 록큰롤의 열정이없어서 그런지 모르겠다. 그래서 오히려 해외에 나가서 공연할 수 있다면 더 좋겠다는 생각을 한다. 우리는 당장이라도 전 세계의 어느 곳에서라도 가서 그곳의 팬들을 깜짝놀라게 해줄 준비가 되어있다.

잔다리 페스타는 첫 회부터 6년째 계속 참여하고 있다. 잔다리 페스타의 출발부터 함께 했기 때문에 이 페스타에 대한 애정이 남다르고 우리를 매년 불러줘서 늘 고마운 마음이다. 앞으로도 매년 함께 할 수 있으면 좋겠다. 다른 페스티벌과의 차이를 물어봤는데 다른 페스티벌을 가보질 못해서 차이를 모르겠다. 언젠가 다른 페스티벌을 가보고 차이를 느낄 수 있으면 좋겠다.

Wings of the ISANG have yet to participate in a rock festival besides Zandari Festa. Maybe it’s because we have a way to go yet, but we have not been called by other festivals. I thought creating a good album and receiving good feedback would have us booked at festivals so we put all of our passion into creating our album, but we have yet to be contacted. Maybe it is because our music tends to be long and lose, and perhaps missing the spirit of rock’n’roll. So I think it could be better to perform overseas. We are ready to surprise the fans all over the world.

We have been participating at the Zandari Festa since its beginning for six years. Since we have been there from the start, I have a particular affection for the festival and am thankful that we are able to participate every year. I hope we will continue to do so. You asked about what sets Zandari apart from other festivals, but I can’t say I know because we have never been to any other. One day, I hope to realize the difference by participating in other festivals.

Do you have any other festivals you would like to play in the future? Or artists you would like to collaborate with?

일단 대형 야외 무대에 서보고 싶다. 음악 생활 하면서 많은 버킷리스트를 하나씩 지워갔는데 아직 그걸 이뤄보지 못했다. 대형 야외 무대가 있는 페스티벌이라면 어느 곳이든 좋다. 다만 바램이 하나 있다면 낮이 아닌 밤이었으면 좋겠다. 우리 음악은 해가 떠있을때는 정말 어울리지 않는다. 낮만 아니라면 자정이 넘은 새벽 시간도 괜찮다.

개인적으로 한국인으로서 국악기가 함께 쓰인 대중음악들에 관심이 많다. 잠비나이, 두번째 달, 블랙스트링 등 그런 멋진 음악을 하는 밴드들과 함께 이상의날개 음악 스타일과 사운드를 섞어 사운드스케이프를 함께 펼쳐보고 싶은 생각이 있다. 더 나아가서 언젠가 우리가 더 유명해지고 경력이 더 쌓이면 중국의 Wang Wen, 일본의 Mono 등의 동양 밴드들과 함께 공연해보고 싶은 바램도 있다. 동양의 록음악은 분명 서양의 음악과 미묘한 차이가 있다고 생각한다. 그런 독특한 개성들을 잘 발휘해서 음악 안에 담아보고 싶다.

I want to play at a big outdoor stage. I was able to cross out things on my bucket list one by one while being a musician, but I haven’t been able to cross that one off yet. Any festival with a big outdoor stage is good, but I do prefer the night rather than the day. Our music really doesn’t go well with daylight. Past midnight would also be fine.

As a Korean, I am personally interested in popular music that uses Korean traditional instruments. I have thought about collaborating with amazing bands like Jambinai, 2nd MOON and Black String to create a soundscape by adding in the music style and sound of Wings of the ISANG. One day, after we gain more experience and fame, I hope to perform with other Asian bands such as Wang Wen of China and Mono of Japan. I think there is a subtle but definite difference between Asian and Western rock music. I want to embody this uniqueness well in music.

Who have been your biggest influences in music?

멤버들마다 각자 다 다르겠지만 나는 개인적으로 메탈리카의 제임스 헷필드다. 기타/보컬 이라는 파트를 맡게 된 이유도 기타 리프 연습을 열심히 했던 이유도 어릴 적에 메탈리카 음악을 연주하기 위해서였다. 10대 시절엔 90년대 얼터너티브와 브릿팝 음악들에 빠져살았고, 20대 초반까지는 스래쉬메탈 밴드생활을 했었다. 어릴 적을 생각해보면내가 지금 이런 음악을 하며 살게 될지는 꿈에도 생각해보지 못했다. 다만 정식으로 음악공부를 하게 되면서 어릴 적에 흘려 들었던 60~70년대 프로그레시브, 아트락에 대해다시금 되짚어 보게 되었고 그런 음악이 굉장히 예술적 가치가 뛰어나단 생각을 하면서부터 어떻게 대중 음악 또 록음악에 예술성을 가미할 수 있을까를 고민하게 되었다. 그렇게 이상의날개 음악이 하나둘 만들어지기 시작했고, 아직도 현재진행형이다. 소위 포스트록 이라고 이야기하는 장르는 그 시절의 아트록의 21세기 버젼이라는 생각을 한다.

가장 좋아하는 한국의 작곡가는 이영훈 작곡가이고, 수많은 명곡을 남기고 2008년에 돌아가셨다. 한국에서는 가수 이문세의 수많은 히트곡을 만든 작곡가로 널리 알려져있다. 이 작곡가의 발라드 음악을 들으면 이상의날개 음악의 멜로디에 많은 영향을 미쳤다는 것을 알 수 있을 것이다. 이문세 4집, 이문세 7집 그리고 2장짜리로 발매된 이영훈작곡가의 프로젝트 앨범 [The Story of Musicians] 은 꼭 들어보길 추천한다. 개인적으로 이런 생각을 한다. 한국 스타일의 서정적인 발라드 음악을 우리는 록과 포스트록의 형식을 빌려서 표현하는 것이라고.

The rest of the members probably have their own, but for me, it is James Hetfield of Metallica. The reason why I used to practice guitar riffs a lot and I currently have the guitar / vocal part is because I used to want to play Metallica music when I was young. I was into 90s alternative and Brit pop in my teens, and until my early 20s, I was in a thrash metal band. I never thought I would make this kind of music. However, as I started to properly study music, I began to look back to music that I didn’t used to pay so much attention to at the time, such as 60-70s progressive, art rock, and became to think that this kind of music had great artistic value and thus began contemplating about ways of adding artistic value in popular and rock music. This is how the music of Wings of the ISANG began to be created and this kind of thought process is still continuing. I think the so-called post-rock genre is the 21st century version of art rock.

My favorite Korean composer is Young Hoon Lee, who passed away in 2008 and left countless legendary songs. He is known for having composed a lot of Moon Sae Lee’s hits. If you listen to this composer’s ballads, you will realize how much influence they had for the melodies of Wings of the Isang’s music. I recommend that you listen to Moon Sae Lee’s 4th and 7th album and Young Hoon Lee’s project double album [The Story of Musicians]. I personally think that we are expressing lyrical ballads in the form of post-rock / rock.

What makes you feel the most creative? How do you get in the mood to write music, are there any rituals you do to prepare for a writing session?

나는 멜로디에 굉장한 자신감이 있다. 소위 멜로디 메이커라고 할 수 있는데 나만의 개성이 담긴 멜로디를 쉽게 잘 만드는 편이다. 그것이 어떤 이에게는 올드하게 들릴 수도어떤 이에게는 괜찮게 들릴 수 있을지도 모르겠지만 어쨌든 내 색깔이 분명하다는 장점이 있다. 곡을 쓸 때 분위기를 따로 만들거나 그러진 않는다. 어떨 때는 합주 전에 멤버를 기다리면서 쓰기도 하고, 어떨 때는 침대에서 자기 전에 기타를 튕기다 만들기도 하고, 어떨 때는 학생들 기타 레슨을 하다가 잠시 쉬면서 만들기도 하고, 어떨 때는 영화를보고 와서 만들기도 하고, 어떨 때는 여행을 가서 그 현장에서 만들기도 하고 그렇다. 음악이라는 것은 빠르게 흐르는 강물 같아서 좋은 코드 진행과 멜로디가 흘러갈 때 순간적으로 바로 손을 물 속에 집어 넣어 낚아채야만 한다. 나는 늘 그런 순간의 Feel을 믿고 음악을 만들어가는 편이다.

다만 그렇게 틈틈히 곡을 스케치하면 시간이 조금만 지나고 금방 잊어버리기 쉽기 때문에 꼭 스마트폰에 보이스메모를 해놓는 편이다. 그렇게 보이스메모 해놓은 스케치가현재 폰에도 셀 수 없이 많다. 앨범이나 음원 발매 후 초창기 보이스메모 버젼을 오래간만에 듣게 되면 그때 처음 작업할 때 생각이 나서 좋기도 하다. 기록은 참 중요한 것이란 생각을 한다.

물론 편곡 과정에서는 음악이론적인 배경이나 합주하면서 멤버들의 의견을 함께 취합해가며 곡을 완성해 간다.

I have huge confidence in melody. You could say that I am a melody maker since I find it easy to create melody of my own unique style. Some people may find it old, and others may like it, but there is no doubt that my style is very apparent. I don’t particularly set a mood to write music. I write them while waiting for members before rehearsal, while playing the guitar before going to bed, during a break in the middle of a guitar lesson, after watching a movie, and while traveling. Music is like a fast river so you need to quickly snatch up the good chords and melody out of the flow. I tend to create music by trusting these momentary feelings.

However, since it is easy to forget if you create sketches of songs this way, I create voice memos on my phone. I have countless of those voice memo sketches on my phone right now. It is also good to hear the early stage recordings right after the release of an album or a song, because it reminds me of the initial excitement. Keeping a record is very important.

Of course, a song becomes finished through application of music theory and opinions of the members during the rearrangement stages.

What is one thing that might surprise the fans to learn about your band members or your band, itself?

음악이 대체적으로 깊고, 무겁고, 어두운 느낌이 있어서 평소 생활도 조용하고 차분할 것 같다는 얘기를 많이 듣는다. 그러나 팬들이 우리 멤버가 노는 것을 보면 다들 깜짝 놀란다. 왜 이렇게 잘 먹고, 잘 노냐는 재밌는 질문을 받곤 한다. 음악은 음악이고 우리는 생각외로 술 좋아하고, 밖에 돌아다니며 노는 거 무척 좋아하는 편이다.

그리고 멤버들의 나이도 보기보다 꽤 많은 편이다. 개인적으로 내 나이를 얘기하면 대개 다들 놀란다. 내 나이는 인터넷 서핑을 하면 금방 알 수 있겠지만 여기서는 노 코멘트하겠다.

People think that we are quiet and calm in our regular day to day lives because our music is deep, heavy and dark. However, the fans are genuinely surprised when they see us how we are. They question how fun we are. Music is music and contrary to what most people think, we like to drink and party out at night.

The members are older than what they seem. People are shocked when I tell them my age. I won’t actually say how old I am, even though I am sure it is easy to find with a little bit of searching on the web.

One thing we’ve learned with getting to meet Korean bands – is there is a battle between everyone’s favorite beverage of choice – so the question is – beer or soju?

술 고를 때 다투는 일은 전혀 없고, 술이라면 어떤 것이든지 다 좋아한다. 위에도 얘기했지만 술 먹고 노는 거 무척 좋아한다. 소주나 맥주를 굳이 가리지는 않지만, 멤버들이가장 좋아하는 것을 이야기하자면 스카치 위스키이다. 내가 개인적으로 스카치 위스키를 매우 좋아하고 집에서도 여러 병 사놓고 아주 자주 마시는 편이라 가끔 멤버들과 술마실 때 스카치를 가져가는데 그럴 때 마다 멤버들이 매우 좋아한다. 멤버 4명 모두 술을 꽤 잘 마시는 편이라 알콜 도수가 높은 술을 즐기는 편이다. 조만간 날씨 좋은 날 밤에 한강에 가서 멤버들끼리 한 잔 하기로 했다. 물론 그런 날에 스카치 위스키는 필수품이다.

We don’t argue over what to drink, because we like all kinds of beverages. As I said before, we like to go out for drinks. We don’t have a preference over soju over beer, but our favorite drinks are scotch and whiskey. I personally like to drink scotch and keep a couple of bottles at home and sometimes the members like it when I bring over a bottle when I go to drinks with them. All of us have pretty high tolerance to alcohol so we tend to favor strong drinks. We are planning on going out to Han river soon at night when the weather is good. Of course, for that kind of a day, scotch and whiskey is a must-bring.
