At the beginning of May, I came across a new summer music festival in South Korea, in the lineup there was a band with the name TalkBats! that caught my attention. To my surprise it was a ska-punk band hailing from Seoul, South Korea. For those of you who happen to live in Los Angeles, California, you may be aware of our large ska community. Locally, we have a good number of ska-infused bands that host concerts each week, and throughout the year especially the summer, ska bands from around the world visit us. It’s no surprise that ska holds a special place in my heart. Everytime I come across a ska band that I didn’t know I get excited, which is why I reached out to TalkBats! for an interview. They graciously accepted. In South Korea, the ska community is expanding gradually and is persistent in keeping the skakin’ alive in their streets.
TalkBats! is composed of six members: Song Yi (vocals), Jeong Hyun (guitar), In Sung (guitar), Woojah (bass), Nagi (Keytar), and Hyunmin (drums). They describe their music as “Keyboard-infused ska-punk that flashes back to some of the best bands from the ’90s ska boom.”
THE BEGINNING
I open up the interview by asking them a set of questions about how they got into music, their music background etc.
Song Yi (vocals): When I was in middle school, I went to the Philippines for language training a few times, and I had a chance to sing in a talent show there. I guess that was the very first time I got interested in singing? But the first time I began singing professionally has been in TalkBats!. I’m not especially good at any instrument enough to play in a band, but I’ve tried little bits of so many instruments. lol I started playing in this band while drinking with Nagi (keytar). Actually, I was a saxophone player at the beginning. Before TalkBats! I was in a band named the Luckids for a very short time. I played keyboards then.
Nagi (keytar): A friend who sings in Rudyguns lured me into this while drinking. I started playing keytar for TalkBats! I’ve been through many instruments as well, but I guess I’ll focus on practicing keyboards. At the moment, I also play for Rudyguns.
Woojah (bass): My mother told me to take piano lessons when I was a preschooler, so that’s how I was introduced to music. As for bass, there was a band I started as a guitarist when I was twenty-one. One night, the band’s bassist couldn’t make it for the show, so I substituted for him and that’s how it all began. I’ve been playing bass for twelve years now. I also play drums, keyboards, melodica, ukulele, danso (Korean flute), recorder, and xylophone. I’m also a former member of Re-Ska, Number One Korean, Pegurians, The Resetters, Stay Foolish etc. At the moment I also play for Zoongsick (중식이밴드) and No Answer.
PongPang (guitar): In 2010 my friend and I started a band because we wanted to have a great memory together before we left for compulsory military service. It’s been nine years, and we’re still playing together in the band Green Flame Boys. TalkBats! is the first band that I play guitar for. I’ve been playing bass mostly for other bands for nine years now. I also play drums, but not that good. I’ve been through so, so many bands… These days, I play in Green Flame Boys, Alzheimer Animal, ChongKook, and Kororse. In Kororse we play powerviolence, but we haven’t done anything yet, no shows, recordings.
In Sung (guitar): I got into music to be rich, but so far I have failed. I started playing guitar since around the age of twenty-five after being released from the military, it’s been ten years now. I really should focus on improving my guitar skills first. Apart from TalkBats! I also play in No Answer.
Hyunmin (drums): In middle school, I decided to try having a band practice with friends since we were bored and killed time at PC gaming centers, pool halls, or karaokes and that’s how I got into music. I hit a drum set at age fourteen but started professionally at age seventeen. I can play anything as long as I’ve got my chopsticks! So consider taking my drum lessons, everyone! (It helps losing weight.) In addition, I play in 1TON and Venez.
TalkBats! was formed in late 2015, with only band practices under their belt they made their debut at Club SHARP’s opening ceremony. Shortly after they went on an almost year-long hiatus from November 2016 to December 2017 but have been active ever since. How did all these talented musicians come together? The band recalls their beginning.
“TalkBats! began as Nagi and KiChul’s project to play music like a Japanese ska-punk band. We wanted to play ska-punk with cheerful female vocals, similar to Muramasa (ムラマサ) or Yum!Yum!ORANGE. At the beginning, Song Yi, the band’s current vocalist, played alto sax, and Nagi, the keytarist played tenor sax. We have been through so many lineup/position changes. Before settling on this current lineup we even disbanded once and didn’t have any shows/band practice for a while. Our current guitarist, Insung, is the latest member to join the band.
Since Song Yi’s voice is quite distinct from Muramasa and Yum!Yum!ORANGE, we started searching for a style that would suit us. The musical tastes of each of the members blended together and gave birth to our music!”
TalkBats! mentions that Song Yi likes Yum!Yum!ORANGE, Sekai No Owari, Disney songs, and early 2000s K-pop. Nagi, on the other hand, likes Rancid, Madness, Tokyo Jihen, Muramasa, Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra, Sekai No Owari, Beatles, and BTS. PongPang is influenced by many melodic ska-punk bands, and In Sung likes ’90s J-pop. Hyunmin, however, mentions being influenced by his father’s vinyl and rock music DVD collection.
With a myriad of musical influences TalkBats! says, “We are satisfied with what we’ve come up with now.”
It certainly has not been easy for TalkBats! to be where they are now. For indie bands in general, new or old, there are always external forces that affect them. A major one is monetary stability. So, I asked the band if that was something that affected them and how they are currently supporting their dream to keep doing art. They respond, “Obviously, you can’t make a living by playing in an underground band. You’ll need at least a part-time job to eat, sleep, or meet any other basic needs without facing problems. We all have a variety of daytime jobs! Song Yi works at a vaporizer (e-cigarette) company as a marketing manager, Nagi works as a web designer, Woojah and Insung are private police guards, Pongpang is a freelance online marketer and sound designer, and finally, Hyunmin is a staff at a New Balance shop.”
INSPIRATION
By this point of the interview, we all have noted that Muramasa has been a big inspiration for them. They say, “Before we wrote our own songs as TalkBats!, we practiced with their songs. Seems like it’s been a while since we have covered their songs! A few of the songs we have practiced are ‘Summer of Love’ (we even covered this song at some early shows.), ‘Kiss My Baby,’ and ‘Fuyu No Uta.’”
As for who or what has inspired them in the past or inspires them now
Song Yi: Anything that makes me excited or happy!! Like the Harry Potter series, Doctor Who, or Disney’s – both the animated movies and the theme parks!!
Nagi: I’ve dedicated my whole life for Disney and alien movies.
Woojah: Mom, dad.
PongPang: Recently, I’m taking the time to discover myself. I’m inspired by myself these days.
Insung: My doggy.
Hyunmin: Captain America’s quote: “Avengers, assemble!”
“Who are you currently listening to?”
Song Yi: Yabai t-shirts yasan.
Nagi: Seiko Matsuda.
Woojah: Any type of Japanese music, especially anime songs, I think they are fantastic.

In Sung: K-pop girl groups mostly. Oh My Girl, recently.
Hyunmin: Jung Jae Il, Yi Sung Yol, and SeoTaiji.
In times when the creative juices are low what do they do to rejuvenate creativity? “When I experience composer’s block, I just keep jamming random stuff on keyboard. I know taking a break and letting myself rest would be a better strategy, but it’s not easy for me because it feels like I gave up. So I get stressed out a lot and extremely annoyed by anyone doing anything around me, haha. Sometimes, just seeing other bands play pumps my passion and makes me wanna DO something right away. Drinking and chatting with the band members also helps me feel motivated, too!” Song Yi says.
PROCESS
The band goes into how they compose their songs and write lyrics. They say, “Usually our songwriting process goes like this. Firstly, Song Yi writes a melody. Secondly, before arranging the song together, usually Song Yi shares the melody with PongPang and discuss about it first. After, we arrange the melody into a song with other members. The amount of time it takes varies from song to song. Some songs come out very easily, while there was one song in particular which took over a month to arrange. When we think we are stuck, we just stop working on that song and put it off to the side. As for lyric writing, Nagi writes most of the lyrics of TalkBats!. She has liked reading books and writing poems since she was little, and she also loves to daydream by herself. Thanks to that, the lyrics come out naturally.”
I move on and ask Song Yi about her voice and how she polishes it. She replies, “I don’t practice anything special for my voice, but I started taking vocal lessons recently ’cause I’m feeling limitation in my vocal skills. It has been about three weeks. When we were recording for our single, I was very nervous since it was my very first time to record anything as a band. So I quit smoking and drinking for almost two weeks before the recording session. Well, it didn’t work at all and only left me stressed out, haha.”
SINGLE ALBUM
Their first single album was released in December 2018 and it has two songs, “Twinkle Twinkle” and “Sonic.”
“‘Twinkle Twinkle’s’ melody was written by ex-member Kichul, and it was arranged afterwards by our current members. The lyrics have been written by Nagi (keytar), mainly inspired by Steven Spielberg’s film Taken (2002). While watching the show, she was mystified, in awe by the chain of links between a human being and another human being, or between human nature and the aliens in the show. When Kichul wrote the melody, it reminded Nagi of the show and the impression it gave her. That’s how the lyrics came out.
While most of TalkBats!’s lyrics are about friendship, ‘Twinkle Twinkle’ takes a further step from there. It’s about all kinds of emotional relationships you can have: with friends, lovers, crushes, or even aliens, etc. Nagi wrote a poem about her thoughts on relationships, and Kichul arranged the words to current lyrics of the song,” Song Yi explains.
When I first listened to “Sonic” it reminded me of Codename Colin’s song “Losing Touch.” Since “Losing Touch” was published almost a year earlier I thought perhaps TalkBats! drew inspiration from it, or perhaps it was pure coincidence. They tell me, “Oh, actually we never knew about this song before you asked this question. Anyway, since ‘Sonic’ was written in 2016, maybe we wrote it before them…? I guess. There’s live footage of us performing ‘Sonic’ in 2016 uploaded on YouTube, so it might be possible that they draw inspiration from us? Haha.”
TO CLOSE THE INTERVIEW
We are halfway through the year, and since their last release I wanted to know what they have been working on and what their plans are for the rest of the year.
Song Yi says, “Songwriting is the thing that we are highly focused on these days. We are burning with passion to write more and more songs. Another goal might be arranging existing songs for future album recordings. We are not sure when it’s gonna happen, but we plan to record all the songs we have. But above all those, the biggest problem we have to solve is finding a new drummer since our drummer Hyunmin has to leave us for a while to serve his mandatory military duty. Finding his substitute is our top priority.”
As some of you may know already I always like to ask three questions before I end our interviews. First, since this article will also be published in Spanish for our Spanish-speaking readers in Latin America, I like to ask what countries they’d like to play in if they ever tour in Latin America.
“If we ever get a chance to play in Latin America, it will blow us away! We really can’t pick just one country to visit since we want to go EVERYWHERE! Mexico, Brazil, Cuba, Peru… and every other country that we can ever go. Anywhere will be great as long as we can experience the smoking-hot passion (which we need now) and romance of Latin America. The landscape must be so beautiful that musical inspirations will just pump out of us while just driving around. Just imagining it already made me so happy!” Song Yi responds.
Second, we are always looking for new music to listen to. So I asked if there are any other South Korean band/s they suggests we listen to.
“I think you’ll already know them, but Green Flame Boys, and our guitarist Yang PongPang’s solo project is also great. PongPang hasn’t uploaded anything yet. He keeps saying it was just a one-shot project, but we seriously doubt it,” Song Yi suggests.
To close the interview, is there anything you’d like to say to our readers?
“First of all, we thank everyone who’s reading this interview! We really hope to become a band that is very special in various standards. By the word ‘special’ we don’t mean being famous. It means having our own vivid character as a band that makes people think ‘Wow, TalkBats! are so… TalkBats!’ Actually, in our band name we hint that same message. When you pronounce TalkBats! in Japanese, it sounds similar to ‘tokubetsu,’ a Japanese word for ‘special.’ So the name has a double meaning. Hehe. We will always try our best to be more and more TalkBats! Hope we see you more often!”

Skankin’ Toda la Noche con TalkBats! (토크뱃츠!)
A principios de mayo, me encontré con un nuevo festival de música en Corea del Sur, en la alineación había una banda con el nombre TalkBats! que me llamó la atención. Para mi sorpresa, era una banda de ska-punk proveniente de Seúl, Corea del Sur. Para aquellos de ustedes que viven en Los Ángeles, California, pueden estar conscientes de nuestra gran comunidad de ska. Localmente, tenemos un buen número de bandas infundidas con ska que organizan conciertos cada semana. Durante todo el año, especialmente en el verano, nos visitan bandas de ska de todo el mundo. No es extraño que el ska tiene un lugar especial en mi corazón. Cada vez que me encuentro con una banda de ska que no conozco me emociono, por eso me puse en contacto con TalkBats! para una entrevista. Ellos aceptaron gentilmente. En Corea del Sur, la comunidad de ska se está expandiendo gradualmente y persiste en mantener con vida el skakin’ en sus calles.
TalkBats! está compuesto por seis miembros: Song Yi (voz), Jeong Hyun (guitarra), In Sung (guitarra), Woojah (bajo), Nagi (Keytar) y Hyunmin (batería). Describen su música como “Ska-punk infundido con teclado que nos recuerda de algunas de las mejores bandas del ska de los 90.”
EL PRINCIPIO
Abro la entrevista haciéndoles un conjunto de preguntas sobre cómo fue su introducción a la música, su fondo musical, etc.
Song Yi (voz): Cuando estaba en la escuela intermedia, fui a Filipinas para aprender un idioma varias veces y tuve la oportunidad de cantar en un espectáculo de talentos allí. ¿Supongo que esa fue la primera vez que me interesé en cantar? ¡Pero la primera vez que comencé a cantar profesionalmente fue en TalkBats!. No soy especialmente buena en ningún instrumento lo suficiente como para tocar en una banda, pero he probado de tocar un poco de muchos instrumentos. Jajaja Comencé a tocar en esta banda mientras bebía con Nagi (keytar). En realidad, yo era una saxofonista al principio. Antes de TalkBats! estuve en una banda llamada Luckids por un tiempo muy corto. Entonces tocaba los teclados.
Nagi (keytar): Un amigo que canta en Rudyguns me atrajo a esto mientras bebía. Comencé a tocar keytar para TalkBats! También he pasado por muchos instrumentos, pero creo que me centraré en practicar los teclados. Por el momento, también toco para Rudyguns.

He estado tocando el bajo mayormente para otras bandas durante nueve años. También tocó la batería, pero no tan bien. He pasado por tantas bandas… Estos días, toco en Green Flame Boys, Alzheimer Animal, ChongKook y Kororse. En Kororse tocamos powerviolence, pero no hemos hecho nada todavía, no shows, grabaciones.
In Sung (guitarra): Me metí en la música para ser rico, pero hasta ahora he fallado. Comencé a tocar la guitarra desde la edad de veinticinco años después de ser liberado del ejército, ya han pasado diez años. Realmente debería de enfocarme en mejorar mis habilidades de guitarra primero. Aparte de TalkBats! también toco en No Answer.
Hyunmin (batería): En la escuela secundaria, decidí intentar practicar con un grupo de amigos ya que estábamos aburridos y pasabamos el tiempo en los centros de juegos de PC, salas de billar o karaokes y así es como me metí en la música. Golpeé una batería a los catorce años, pero empecé profesionalmente a los diecisiete años. ¡Puedo tocar cualquier cosa siempre que tenga mis palillos! ¡Así que considera tomar mis lecciones de batería, todos! (Ayuda a perder peso). Además, toco en 1TON y Venez.
TalkBats! se formó a fines de 2015, con solo prácticas de banda, hicieron su debut en la ceremonia de apertura del Club SHARP. Poco después de una pausa de casi un año, de noviembre de 2016 a diciembre de 2017, han estado activos desde entonces. ¿Cómo se juntaron todos estos talentosos músicos? La banda recuerda su inicio.
“TalkBats! comenzó como el proyecto de Nagi y KiChul de tocar música como una banda japonesa de ska-punk. Queríamos tocar el ska-punk con voces femeninas alegres, similares a Muramasa (ム ラ マ サ) o Yum! Yum!ORANGE. Al principio, Song Yi, la vocalista actual de la banda, tocaba saxo alto, y Nagi, la keytarist tocaba saxo tenor. Hemos pasado por tantos cambios de alineación/posición. Antes de instalarnos en esta alineación actual, incluso nos disolvimos una vez y no tuvimos ningún show/práctica de banda por un tiempo. Nuestro actual guitarrista, In Sung, es el último miembro en unirse a la banda.
Dado que la voz de Song Yi es bastante distinta de la de Muramasa y Yum! Yum!ORANGE, comenzamos a buscar un estilo que se adaptara a nosotros. ¡Los gustos musicales de cada uno de los miembros se mezclaron y dieron origen a nuestra música!”
TalkBats! menciona que a Song Yi le gusta Yum! Yum!ORANGE, Sekai No Owari, canciones de Disney y K-pop de principios de la década de 2000. A Nagi, por otro lado, le gusta Rancid, Madness, Tokyo Jihen, Muramasa, Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra, Sekai No Owari, Beatles y BTS. PongPang está influenciado por muchas melodías de bandas de ska-punk, y In Sung le gusta el J-pop de los 90. Ellos responden: “Obviamente, no puedes ganarte la vida tocando en una banda underground. Necesitarás al menos un trabajo de medio tiempo para comer, dormir o satisfacer cualquier otra necesidad básica sin tener que enfrentar problemas. ¡Todos tenemos una variedad de trabajos diurnos! Song Yi trabaja en una empresa de vaporizadores (e-cigarette) como gerente de mercadeo, Nagi trabaja como diseñadora web, Woojah e Insung son guardias de la policía privada, Pongpang es un comercializador en línea y diseñador de sonido independiente, y finalmente, Hyunmin es un miembro del personal de una tienda de New Balance.”
INSPIRACIÓN
A este punto de la entrevista, todos hemos notado que Muramasa ha sido una gran inspiración para ellos. Dicen: “Antes de que escribiéramos nuestras propias canciones como TalkBats!, practicamos con sus canciones. Parece que ha pasado un tiempo desde que cubrimos sus canciones! Algunas de las canciones que hemos practicado son ‘Summer of Love’ (incluso cubrimos esta canción en algunos shows), ‘Kiss My Baby’ y ‘Fuyu No Uta’”.
En cuanto a quién o qué los ha inspirado en el pasado o los inspira ahora
Song Yi: ¡Cualquier cosa que me emocione o haga feliz ! !Como la serie de Harry Potter, Doctor Who o Disney’s – tanto las películas animadas como los parques temáticos!
Nagi: He dedicado toda mi vida a las películas de Disney y de extraterrestres.
Woojah: Mamá, papá.

En momentos en que los jugos creativos son bajos, ¿qué hacen para rejuvenecer la creatividad? “Cuando experimento el bloqueo del compositor, sigo tocando cosas aleatorias en el teclado. Sé que tomar un descanso y dejarme descansar sería una mejor estrategia, pero no es fácil para mí porque siento que me he rendido. Así que me estreso mucho y me molesta mucho que alguien haga algo a mi alrededor, jaja. A veces, solo ver a otras bandas tocar me da pasión y me hace querer HACER algo de inmediato. ¡Beber y conversar con los miembros de la banda también me ayuda a sentirme motivada!” dice Song Yi.
PROCESO
La banda nos dice cómo componen sus canciones y escriben letras. Dicen: “Por lo general, nuestro proceso de composición de canciones es así. En primer lugar, Song Yi escribe una melodía. En segundo lugar, antes de organizar la canción juntos, generalmente Song Yi comparte la melodía con PongPang y discute sobre ello primero. Después, organizamos la melodía en una canción con los otros miembros. La cantidad de tiempo que toma varía de una canción a otra. Algunas canciones salen muy fácilmente, mientras que hubo una en particular que tardó más de un mes en arreglarse. Cuando pensamos que estamos estancados, simplemente dejamos de trabajar en esa canción y volvemos a ella despues. En cuanto a la escritura de letras, Nagi escribe la mayoría de las letras de TalkBats!. A ella le ha gustado leer libros y escribir poemas desde que era pequeña, y también le encanta soñar despierta. Gracias a eso, las letras salen naturalmente.”
Sigo adelante y le pregunto a Song Yi sobre su voz y cómo la pule. Ella responde: “No practico nada especial para mi voz, pero comencé a tomar lecciones vocales recientemente porque me siento limitada en mis habilidades vocales. Han pasado unas tres semanas. Cuando estábamos grabando para nuestro single, estaba muy nerviosa ya que era la primera vez que grababa algo como banda. Así que dejé de fumar y beber durante casi dos semanas antes de la sesión de grabación. Bueno, no funcionó en absoluto y solo me dejó estresado, jaja.”
PARA CERRAR LA ENTREVISTA
Estamos a mitad de año, y desde su último lanzamiento quise saber en qué han estado trabajando y cuáles son sus planes para el resto del año.
Song Yi dice: “La composición de canciones es algo en lo que estamos muy concentrados en estos días. Estamos ardiendo de pasión por escribir más y más canciones. Otro objetivo podría ser organizar las canciones existentes para futuras grabaciones de álbumes. No estamos seguros de cuándo sucederá, pero planeamos grabar todas las canciones que tenemos. Pero, sobre todo, el mayor problema que tenemos que resolver es encontrar un nuevo baterista, ya que nuestro baterista Hyunmin nos tiene que dejar por un tiempo para cumplir su deber militar obligatorio. Encontrar a su sustituto es nuestra principal prioridad.”
Como algunos de ustedes ya saben, siempre me gusta hacer tres preguntas antes de terminar nuestras entrevistas. Primero, dado que este artículo también se publicará en español para nuestros lectores de habla hispana en América Latina, me gustaría preguntar en qué países les gustaría tocar si alguna vez hacen una gira por América Latina.
“Si alguna vez tenemos la oportunidad de tocar en América Latina, ¡nos dejará boquiabiertos! ¡Realmente no podemos elegir un solo país para visitar ya que queremos ir a TODAS PARTES! México, Brasil, Cuba, Perú … y cualquier otro país al que podamos ir. El lugar será genial siempre que podamos experimentar la pasión ardiente (que necesitamos ahora) y el romance de América Latina. El paisaje debe ser tan hermoso que las inspiraciones musicales simplemente brotarán de nosotros mientras conducimos. ¡Solo imaginándo ya me hizo tan feliz!” Song Yi responde.
En segundo lugar, siempre estamos buscando nueva música para escuchar. Así que pregunté si hay alguna otra banda surcoreana que sugieran que escuchemos.
