At the beginning of March I came across a band called Platform Stereo (플랫폼 스테레오) on instagram a quartet that hails from the beautiful port city of Busan, South Korea and is composed of Kim Jin-Seop (vocals), Hong Dong-hyun (bass), Lim Jung-hoon (guitar) and Choi Seung-han (drums). I followed them for a bit before actually taking the time to listen to their music and boy was I in for a treat. I instantly fell in love with their sound inspired by futuristic worlds infused with elements of electronica, city pop, lo-fi, funk, vaporwave among various other genres. Their songs follow a moderate tempo for the most part and have a simple melody line that allows listeners to effortlessly groove to the chill sounds. You can explore somewhere without ever going anywhere with Platform Stereo, let them take you on a trip around the universe and back with their music. I reached out to them via email for an introductory interview and they graciously and enthusiastically replied to me and we started talking.
We start off the interview by asking the members about their musical background, they say,
Kim Jin-Seop: I started making music because of a friend I met when I was 15 years old. I searched on the internet what exactly a “band” meant because I wanted to be friends with him. A band was often composed of a guitarist, bassist, and drummer. So I told him, “I want to play the guitar!” That’s how my interest in music started. I formed a band with that friend and we had a huge interest in punk so we naturally decided to perform punk music. The band was mostly influenced by The Pixies and Rancid. You wouldn’t believe that I had performed punk before because the style of music for Platform Stereo is the opposite, but yes I started playing punk first. I was a vocalist whenever I belonged to a band. I actually started singing because there was nobody who could sing, but I didn’t push myself to practice vocals. As for what instruments I play, I can play guitar, irish whistle, blues harp, and piano a bit.
Hong Dong-Hyun: I started music since high school after I listened to ‘Honey’ by L’Arc~en~Ciel. I really liked the bassline of the song and wanted to perform it myself. I started playing rock at first, but I also like Motown artists too. I’ve also tried to play other instruments, but didn’t work out well so I just promised myself to play the bass only. I’ve spent my entire life playing bass.
Lim Jung-Hoon: One day I watched a clip of Bob Dylan singing “We Are The World” and searched online about the type of person he was and that is how I got into folk music and started playing acoustic guitar. I naturally got interested in blues after I listened to legendary guitarist Mike Bloomfield. I have played guitar since high school, it’s been eight years now. I started playing with a FMF guitar, and I can also play the Korean drum Samulnori (Korean traditional percussion quartet) too.
Choi Seung-Han: I really had fun playing drums at church so I wanted to learn it more professionally. Musical accompaniment was really interesting for me since I was exposed to it at church, so I had much interest in session bands. So I wondered how to study and perform together professionally, then I entered a college for applied music. I have been playing instruments for eight years now and have learned a bit of percussion such as djembe and conga along the way.
More often than not, in music we often observe musicians perform in multiple bands so I asked the guys if they had been a part of another band or are currently playing in a band besides Platform Stereo. Dong-Hyun said he had played for two other bands in the past, oppositely Jung-Hoon reveals that Platform Stereo is his first band. Just like Dong-Hyun, Jin-Seop has also performed in two other bands and has composed music for both. He says that he used to perform in a punk and a folk band before entirely focusing on Platform Stereo. Lastly, Seung-Han told us that he is currently part of an pop based band called “Concent” as well.
It’s always interesting to know how everyone came together and started the band, the guys recall that time.
Kim Jin-Seop: I started planning the band Platform Stereo and gathering members while I was composing music. I wanted to use Logic at the end of 2017, so I purchased a used MacBook. I had never used Logic before, but it wasn’t difficult since I had used the app Garageband. UI is quite similar, but at the moment I only work on Logic.
Hong Dong-Hyun: I was about to quit music when I left a band, then Kim provoked me that if I can play a bass by ear only. That’s how I became a member of Platform Stereo to show my skills.
Lim Jung-Hoon: My friend was a guitarist in Platform Stereo but he had to leave for a while for personal reasons, so I replaced him and joined the band later.
Choi Seung-Han: I am the member who joined last. One of my friends who plays guitar suggested I listen to Platform Stereo’s music. After taking a listen I thought it would be fascinating to perform with them so I joined the band without hesitation.
Kim Jin-Seop: After some time we finally formed the team in 2018, and this is how we are now through some changes in members. However, as we were forming it I was really concerned about which style of song I should make in the future. “Taillight” was our first song then we started composing songs like 2049, Mind Bloom, Moondance in order for 3 months, but those were already made before the band was formed. After we were together, we made some other songs like “Starfall”, “Silk”, and “Songjeong,” but then I had to work alone since the rest of members couldn’t understand the style of music that I pursue. Henceforth, the rest of the demo that is available on Soundcloud are done by Hong and I. I have found out that we both have many similarities in music and he kind of understood about the work that I was trying to do while we were putting together the band. It was a really interesting transitioning from folk and punk because the styles are very different from PS, but we finished writing the rest of the 12 demo songs within a month this past February. It was a time full of synergy for all of us. It was non-stop because we had many songs and the members were all exhausted from making their parts.
Since, the band uses electronic sounds to build their songs I was interested to know what other gear or software they use. Jin-Seop says, “Apart from Logic, I also use Akai MPK Mini too. It is small and comfortable to use. Recently, I have a lot of interest in OP-1 of teenage engineering, but I don’t think I can afford it now. Haha! I want to buy a Roland Juno, Korg M1, and Nord Electro 6 if I can afford them in the future.”
We often talk about the difficulties of being a musician and most of the time bands express that it’s hard to make a living and support themselves, so they often have extra jobs or businesses on the side. I like to touch upon this topic because in some cases it’s good to show fans how important it is to support their favorite artist so they can continue doing the music they love to listen to. On the other hand, sometimes this questions reveals other talents or skills musicians have. The members of PS talk about their extracurricular activities to make ends meet and keep making art.
Kim Jin-Seop: By the time I reached 20, I had to continue many different jobs such as PC café, fast food restaurant, networking company, construction, and cleaning service since I didn’t enroll for college. For now, I just want to focus on music as if it would be the last chance in my life. It is really difficult for me now, but I have never been happier than this in my life.
Hong Dong-Hyun: It is really economically difficult to do music in South Korea. I have performed and had a job at the same time, but then I quit my job to focus on art and express my creative side. I’m starving every day because I don’t have money now, haha.
Lim Jung-Hoon: Other than the band, my job is to deliver automobile parts.
Choi Seung-Han: I haven’t earned much money performing in the band yet. I had some other jobs before, but at the moment I am working as a drummer instructor.
Platform Stereo’s music has various elements from lo-fi to funk and city pop to name a few genres, so I asked what inspires them in their everyday life.
Kim Jin-Seop: I’ve been listening to music since I was a kid regardless of genres. Starting with punk, I listened to music such as pop, rock, hip hop, soul, and folk because I wanted to have a wider understanding of other genres. It was difficult for me to listen and learn about music since my parents didn’t allow it and I wasn’t very studious, but I liked going to school. I was able to listen to music at school on my friend’s music player. Then I got interested in movies by watching them through friends’ media players, I especially loved sci-fi films. I liked many genres, but science fiction was special to me. My father told me a lot of scientific stories because his major was nuclear physics and that’s how sci-fi films caught my attention. The interview will not end if I start talk about the stuff that inspire me. A thing that is forbidden in our band is to talk with me about films, music, games and animation because they’ll have to listen to it all day! Haha!
Hong Dong-Hyun: I had to perform various genres of music since I majored in contemporary music in school. So various types of music have affected me and it is useful when I compose music.
Lim Jung-Hoon: Gilad Hekselman, Adam Rogers, and Kurt Rosenwinkel have influenced me a lot since I’m studying about jazz. I really like those artists!
Choi Seung-Han: I personally listen to albums related with Incognito, Tower of Power, and Motown artists, as well as practice and research. I was questioning myself as to how could I perform better in basic rhythm and my research led me to listen to these artists and music.
As for what they are currently listening to the guys say,
Kim Jin-Seop: Cuco, Jinsang, Jungle, Fleet Foxes, Arcade Fire, and the Chemical Brothers.
Hong Dong-Hyun: I like Clairo so much. I like her voice.

Choi Seung-Han: I’m really into Ariana Grande now and listening to all the music in the album. For now, I try to listen to various music. I listen to standard jazz a lot , Bill Withers, and Motown artists like Stevie Wonder and Jackson 5.

Kim Jin-Seop: I watch movies. Everything is in there.
Hong Dong-Hyun: I watch dramas on Netflix when I rest.
Lim Jung-Hoon: I watch a performance on video.
Choi Seung-Han: I watch videos of other drummers on YouTube.
As to how they approach music writing and lyrics Kim Jin-Seop reveals, “We first choose a concept and genre of music, beat and how to make the style of sound. We design and then make a beat and use a synthesizer for code sound. As we’re doing this, ideas flow through my head and I suddenly feel something pulling me, the mood of the song emerges. When I complete it after inserting the instruments one by one, it’s always different from the concept that we had chosen at first. Haha. ‘2049’ is the only song among the official releases which the concept hasn’t changed from start to finish it’s the same as we envisioned it. When I complete the overall work by using the synthesizer and beat, I compose the melody for vocal and let my members listen to the song. If the majority of the members agree on it, then we write the bass, drum and guitar. Afterwards, I start to mix all the recordings of the instruments through some direction on bass, guitar, and beat based on my design. When the final mixing is done, we upload the demo song on SoundCloud. As for lyrics, we write them after the framework of the song is somewhat complete, and it’s usually based on my feelings and images I felt when I was composing, rather than writing specific content.”
In regards to his vocals, Kim says, “I had a habit of speaking loud when I played punk. The vocal style of punk, screaming, seemed nice to me and I wanted to be just like Tim Armstrong in Rancid. So I smoked a lot, but failed to turn my voice into that style. I guess my voice is meant to be just like this. Hence, I try to talk quietly now and drink a lot of water to keep my voice healthy. I am also trying my best to reduce smoking.”
As I was going through their Soundcloud and Youtube accounts/content there were three songs that caught my ear “2049,” “Starfall,” and “Moondance.” Kim explains, “ ‘2049’ was influenced by Blade Runner. The song focuses on the image and the atmosphere which the movie has expressed rather than the story about the movie itself. A dark city, a twisted desire, and the dreariness of human nature, the inner side in humans which is beautiful, but sorrowful. And I wanted to express the emotion of liberation at the end.”
“To talk about ‘Starfall’, there is a large lake called Hapcheon in South Korea and I was addicted to bass fishing during that time. One day, I was fishing around 4am and I just looked up at the sky and it was full of stars. I had never seen that many stars in my life. I wanted to express that overwhelming moment with a chiptune & lo-fi sound concept. I wanted to express my childhood memory of playing Nintendo into a sound. I hope you feel vaporwave in there as well.”
“ ‘Moondance’ is my own interpretation of city pop. I’ve wanted to write city pop and express the influence of it, but I didn’t want to make it a completely city pop. I always enjoy expressing the style of a song in my own way, and this is one of them. There is a place called Haeundae Centum City in Busan. It’s got a really wonderful scenery and the night view there is awesome too. I have expressed the mood of there into the song,” he continues.
So far, Platform Stereo have released a single called Moondance and an EP called Taillight on top of their newly published demos on their Soundcloud. Jin-Seop reveals that he’s planning to release two albums this year. He says, “We will make schedules for recording, and all the demo songs in Soundcloud will be released in album or EP. We will focus on recording the new album during Spring. Meanwhile, we will perform a few live shows and you will probably hear more news at the end of Spring. Please keep an eye on our Instagram! Our goal is to release all our demo songs this year.”
In May they will release a single album for their song “Silk” which you can hear below. They recorded this live video mid april for this interview. Keep an eye out on their social medias for the release!
As some of you may know already I always like to ask three questions before I end our interviews. First, since this article will also be published in Spanish for our Spanish speaking readers in Latin America and other parts of the world, I like to ask what countries they’d like play in if they ever tour in Latin America or a spanish speaking country.
Kim Jin-Seop: Spain! I really want to participate for Primavera Sound Music Festival although I don’t know when. Also, I like the song called ‘Spain’ from American jazz pianist Chick Corea. It’s a country that I really want to visit whenever I listen to this music. I also like Flamenco too! Ah! It’s the country of Javier Ángel Encinas Bardem and Penélope Cruz!
Hong Dong-Hyun: Mexico. I’ve heard from Mexicans that Koreans are kind since Mexico was able to advance to round 16 of the FIFA World Cup Russia 2018 when South Korea defeated Germany.
Lim Jung-Hoon: Spain, because I like Flamenco.
Choi Seung-Han: Brazil (Actually, I don’t care anywhere). I’ve never been to any place so I want to visit anywhere.

Explorando el Universo con Platform Stereo (플랫폼 스테레오)
A principios de marzo, me encontré con una banda llamada Platform Stereo (플랫폼 스테레오) en instagram, un cuarteto que proviene de la hermosa ciudad portuaria de Busan, Corea del Sur y está compuesta por Kim Jin-Seop (voz), Hong Dong-Hyun (bajo), Lim Jung-Hoon (guitarra) y Choi Seung-Han (batería). Los seguí en instagram unas semanas antes de tomarme el tiempo para escuchar su música y claro no sabía la maravilla que me estaba perdiendo. Instantáneamente me enamoré de su sonido inspirado en mundos futuristas infundidos con elementos de electrónica, pop city, lo-fi, funk, vaporwave entre varios otros géneros. Sus canciones siguen un ritmo moderado en su mayor parte y tienen una línea de melodía simple que permite a los oyentes moverse sin esfuerzo a los sonidos calmos. Puedes explorar un lugar sin tener que ir a ningún lado con Platform Stereo (PS), deja que te lleven de viaje por el universo y de regreso con su música. Me acerqué a ellos por correo electrónico para una entrevista y me respondieron con amabilidad y entusiasmo y empezamos a hablar.
Comenzamos la entrevista preguntándole a los miembros sobre su carrera musical, dicen,

Fue una transición realmente interesante de folk y punk porque los estilos son muy diferentes a los de PS, pero terminamos de escribir el resto de las 12 canciones de demos en un mes, en febrero pasado. Fue un tiempo lleno de sinergia para todos nosotros. Fue ininterrumpido porque teníamos muchas canciones y todos los miembros estaban agotados de hacer sus partes.
Como la banda usa sonidos electrónicos para construir sus canciones, me interesaba saber qué otro equipo o software usan. Jin-Seop dice, “Aparte de Logic, también uso Akai MPK Mini. Kim Jin-Seop: Cuando cumplí 20 años, tenía que continuar con muchos trabajos diferentes, como PC café, restaurante de comida rápida, compañía de redes, construcción y servicio de limpieza, ya que no me inscribí en la universidad. Por ahora, solo quiero centrarme en la música como si fuera la última oportunidad en mi vida. Es realmente difícil para mí ahora, pero nunca he sido más feliz que en estos momentos en mi vida.
Hong Dong-Hyun: Es realmente económicamente difícil hacer música en Corea del Sur. He estado tocando y tuve un trabajo al mismo tiempo, pero luego renuncié a mi trabajo para centrarme en el arte y expresar mi lado creativo. Me muero de hambre todos los días porque no tengo dinero ahora, jaja.

En cuanto a cómo es el proceso de escribir melodías y las letras para ellos, Kim Jin-Seop revela, “Primero elegimos un concepto y género de música, ritmo y cómo hacer el estilo de sonido. Diseñamos y luego hacemos un ritmo y usamos un sintetizador para el sonido de código. Mientras hacemos esto, las ideas fluyen por mi cabeza y de repente siento que algo me atrae, surge el estado de ánimo de la canción. Cuando la completo después de insertar los instrumentos uno por uno, siempre es diferente del concepto que habíamos elegido al principio. Jaja. “2049” es la única canción entre los lanzamientos oficiales que el concepto no ha cambiado de principio a fin, es la misma que nos imaginamos. Cuando terminó el trabajo general utilizando el sintetizador y el ritmo, compongo la melodía para la voz y dejo que mis miembros escuchen la canción. Si la mayoría de los miembros están de acuerdo, escribimos el bajo, la batería y la guitarra. Luego, empiezo a mezclar todas las grabaciones de los instrumentos en alguna dirección en el bajo, la guitarra y el ritmo según mi diseño. Cuando finaliza la mezcla final, cargamos la canción de demo en SoundCloud. En cuanto a las letras, las escribimos después de que el marco de la canción está algo completa, y generalmente se basa en mis sentimientos e imágenes que sentí cuando estaba componiendo, en lugar de escribir contenido específico.”
En lo que respecta a su voz, Kim dice, “Tenía la costumbre de hablar en voz alta cuando tocaba punk. El estilo vocal del punk, gritando, me parecía agradable y quería ser como Tim Armstrong de Rancid. Así que fumé mucho, pero no pude convertir mi voz en ese estilo. Supongo que mi voz está destinada a ser así. Por lo tanto, trato de hablar en voz baja ahora y beber mucha agua para mantener mi voz saludable. También estoy haciendo mi mejor esfuerzo para reducir el hábito de fumar.”
Mientras revisaba sus cuentas/contenido de Soundcloud y Youtube, hubo tres canciones que me llamaron la atención, “2049”, “Starfall” y “Moondance”. Kim explica que, ” ‘2049’ estuvo influenciado por Blade Runner. La canción se centra en la imagen y la atmósfera que la película ha expresado en lugar de la historia sobre la película en sí. Una ciudad oscura, un deseo retorcido y la tristeza de la naturaleza humana, el lado interno de los seres humanos que es hermoso, pero triste. Y quería expresar la emoción de la liberación al final.”
“Para hablar de ‘Starfall’, hay un gran lago llamado Hapcheon en Corea del Sur y durante ese tiempo fui adicto a la pesca de la lubina. Un día, estaba pescando alrededor de las 4 am y solo miré hacia el cielo y estaba lleno de estrellas. Nunca había visto tantas estrellas en mi vida. Quería expresar ese momento abrumador con un concepto de sonido chiptune y lo-fi. Quería expresar mi recuerdo infantil de jugar el Nintendo en un sonido. Espero que también sientas vaporwave ahí dentro.”
“ “Moondance’ es mi propia interpretación de city pop. He querido escribir city pop y expresar su influencia, pero no quería que fuera completamente city pop. Siempre disfruto expresando el estilo de una canción a mi manera, y este es uno de ellos. Hay un lugar llamado Haeundae Centum City en Busan. Tiene un paisaje realmente maravilloso y la vista nocturna también es increíble. He expresado el estado de ánimo de allí en la canción,” continúa.
Hasta ahora, Platform Stereo ha lanzado un sencillo llamado Moondance y un EP llamado Taillight, además de sus demos recientemente publicadas en su Soundcloud. Jin-Seop revela que planea lanzar dos álbumes este año. Él dice, “Haremos programaciones para la grabación, y todas las canciones de demostración en Soundcloud se lanzarán en un álbum o EP. Nos enfocaremos en grabar el nuevo álbum durante la primavera. Mientras tanto, realizaremos algunos shows en vivo y probablemente escucharán más noticias al final de la primavera. Por favor, mantengan un ojo en nuestro Instagram! Nuestro objetivo es lanzar todas nuestras canciones de demo este año.”

Kim Jin-Seop: ¡España! Tengo muchas ganas de participar en Primavera Sound Music Festival, aunque no sé cuándo. Además, me gusta la canción llamada ‘Spain’ del pianista estadounidense de jazz Chick Corea. Es un país que realmente quiero visitar cada vez que escucho esta música. ¡También me gusta el flamenco! Ah! ¡Es el país de Javier Ángel Encinas Bardem y Penélope Cruz!
Hong Dong-Hyun: México. He escuchado de mexicanos que los coreanos son amables desde que México pudo avanzar a la ronda 16 de la Copa Mundial de la FIFA Rusia 2018 cuando Corea del Sur derrotó a Alemania.
Lim Jung-Hoon: España, porque me gusta el flamenco.
Choi Seung-Han: Brasil (en realidad, no me importa que país). Nunca he estado en ningún lugar, así que quiero visitar cualquier lugar.
