Jaeney (재니) – Tell Me Why

Every once in a while I get notified about a video, then just forget about it within the next few hours. Unfortunately that was the case with this piece of melodic perfection. Luckily, I have friends who try to keep me informed of music they know will make a mark on my soul, and I was yet again notified that I most certainly needed to check this video out. Thank god I listened this time.

Admittedly I don’t know much about Jaeney. In a way that’s the best part—discovering something and having it completely alter your reality. Her voice is truly magnificent, gritty and surreal. She has an ache and soul in her voice not unlike a Carole King or more recently, early Sia (à la Some People Have Real Problems or her work with Zero 7). It’s gritty and pure, nothing overexaggerated or unnecessarily ostentatious.

The video is absolutely gorgeous. With a completely Italian staff (including actress Francesca Valenti), the film is rustic, honest, and completely raw. There’s a compelling tapestry woven here, of a woman wandering alone in the world as she contemplates the spaces her lover left behind—signified by bits of dancing light in a mostly gray landscape.

This really was such a pleasant surprise. I’m ashamed it took me so long to appreciate it, but appreciate it I did, and now I’m utterly in love with Jaeney
